MAX IV is responsible for the systematic work environment (SAM) for all its employees. In addition, it has an important role in educating and supervising all external users and contractors in terms of safety. This work is led by the Safety Group at MAX IV, which comprises about 16 people organized in three teams: general and fire safety, chemical and environmental safety, and radiation safety.

The Chemical Safety Technician is responsible to monitor, control, and implement laboratory chemical safety standards in the gas storage laboratory. Communicate needs with experimental groups to purchase and maintain supply of experimental gases.

Work duties and areas of responsibility:

  • Maintain chemical/gas storage laboratory in accordance with safety laws and regulations set by MAX IV and authorities
  • Assist with experimental chemical/gas delivery installations when required
  • Prepare hazardous chemical/gas packages for shipment and transfer
  • Prepare and maintain complete, accurate, timely, concise and legible records of all chemical/gas safety compliance activities
  • Make routine and special observations of the status of chemical/gas safety systems and document summary findings
  • Provide advice, assistance, and monitoring services to lab personnel regarding routine chemical safety matters and during contamination clean-up
  • Communicate with experimental staff about chemical/gas needs and facilitate purchasing chemical/gas as needed

Requirements:

  • University degree or equivalent experience as a chemical safety technician
  • Experience working with hazardous gases under pressure
  • Knowledge of chemical compatibilities and hazard classifications and the ability to interpret material safety data sheets
  • Physically capable of moving a 50L, 80kg bottle of compressed gas

Desirable:

  • Experience as a chemical research technician at an experimental laboratory
  • Good collaboration skills, as well as knowledge and ability in Swedish and English, both in speech and writing
  • Practical knowledge of gas equipment for cylinders
