Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Accelerator Developement

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The core of the MAX IV facility are three sources of synchrotron radiation: a 3 GeV electron storage rings that provides ultrahigh brightness X-rays, a 1.5 GeV ring providing soft X rays and UV radiation and a 3 GeV linear accelerator that serves as an injector to the two storage rings and also generates electron bunches that drive the production of ultra-short X ray pulses at the so-called Short Pulse Facility (SPF).

MAX IV has been pioneering a number of developments in accelerator physics and engineering, and hosts, in particular, the first ultralow emittance storage ring based on a multi-bend achromat magnet lattice, a design which is currently being followed by many other laboratories worldwide. The linear accelerator has reached its design goals, but needs to be developed further in order to produce even shorter X-ray pulses, down to the 10 fs range, for the SPF. For this, innovative accelerator schemes and new developments for diagnose of the short electron bunches, will be needed. A further development towards a Soft X-ray Free Electro Laser (SXL) has been initiated by our user community, and a CDR is under completion, which will serve as a base for driving the project further.

This research position will be within the Accelerator Division, and particularly, within the Accelerator Development Group, which consists of roughly twelve persons. The mission for this group, apart from accelerator research and development, is to help out in the daily operation of the accelerators, so that high reliability and availability of the produced X-rays, are achieved. The successful candidate shall establish and coordinate a team, within the Accelerator Development Group, that takes on the challenges in temporal diagnostics of the electron bunches and their necessary synchronization with the experimental equipment.

Job Description
