We are looking for a historian holding a doctoral degree and specialising in Middle Eastern history who is at the beginning of their career.

Workplace and subject

The successful candidate will divide their time between the Department of History and the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies.

The Department of History has three divisions: History, Human Rights Studies and East and South-East Asian Studies. The position is in the History division, which has about 60 teaching staff and researchers and is the centre for the National Graduate School of Historical Studies. Research at the division includes cultural history, history of knowledge and global history, and moves chronologically from the late Middle Ages to the present day.

The Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) supports, coordinates and expands interdisciplinary research on the Middle East at Lund University.

The position is linked to the strategic research area The Middle East in the Contemporary World (MECW) coordinated by Professor Karin Aggestam and Professor Ronny Berndtsson at CMES. The research area includes more than 30 researchers from four different faculties at Lund University and is coordinated by CMES. The MECW programme is organised into four research themes: 1) Environment and sustainable development; 2) Security and sustainable peace; 3) Democratisation, migration and sustainable socio-economic development; and 4) Religion, identity and culture.

What we offer

As Associate Senior Lecturer you develop your qualifications and may then be promoted to permanent employment as a senior lecturer. As part of your appointment, you will be offered a mentor and five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education.

We support you in your move to Sweden and give you the opportunity to learn Swedish through the University’s Swedish language courses for new international staff. If you have a family, they will find new contacts and support through Lund’s International Citizen Hub.

Lund University is a public authority which means that you receive special benefits, generous annual leave and a favourable occupational pension. The University applies individual salary-setting. Read more about being employed at Lund University here:  Work at Lund University | Lund University.

Duties

The successful candidate will mainly carry out independent research linked to the overarching theme of the MECW and choose research questions, develop theoretical ideas and apply research methods most appropriate. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide high-quality teaching at all levels of history and to take an active part in the research and educational development of the Department of History.

The successful candidate will also be expected to learn Swedish at a level required to perform common duties in research and education.
