Job description

Lund University announces a permanent position as Professor in Financial Economics. The position is full-time employment and is placed at the Department of Economics, Lund University School of Economics and Management.

The position consists of conducting own research, research leadership, teaching and supervision at the bachelor, master and PhD levels, outreach, and some administrative work. Professors are expected to actively apply for external research funding, and to engage in collaboration with colleagues, students and the surrounding society.

The position consists of actively leading and developing the financial economics area at the Department of Economics by conducting and stimulating research, nurturing the educational environment, and developing research, teaching, and engagement with society. Central tasks within the position are to develop international collaborations, to provide support to younger colleagues, to initiate and contribute to applications for research grants, and to sustain the standing of the internationally successful MSc in Finance program.

Eligibility and qualification requirements

To be eligible as a professor, the applicant needs to have shown both scientific and pedagogical skills.

In addition, according to Lund University's employment regulations, it is required for a professor to have completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or to have acquired these skills in another way.

To be qualified for the position, the applicant must have a PhD degree in Finance or Economics. The applicant must have extensive research and teaching experience in financial economics and relevant subfields of finance and economics; specifically the applicant needs to have research and teaching experience in one or more of the following specializations: Asset Pricing, Derivatives and Risk Management, Financial Intermediation, Financial Stability and Credit Risk, Behavioral Finance, Household finance, and Market Microstructure.

Very good oral and written proficiency in English is a requirement.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4, Section 3).

At Lund University, the following shall form the assessment criteria for the position of Professor:

  • a very good national and international standing as a researcher – the requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject;
  • a very high level of teaching skill, including a very good ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods;
  • a good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD;
  • a good ability to engage with the wider society and communicate their activities;
  • a good general ability to lead and develop activities.

The School of Economics and Management strives for a balance between research and teaching in all positions.

The overall evaluation of the pedagogical qualifications includes training in teaching and learning in higher education, pedagogical experience, and pedagogical skills.

In the overall assessment of the scientific skills, a particular emphasis will be placed on publications and:

  • the ability to publish research in highly ranked journals, as sole author as well as in collaboration with others;
  • recent publications in highly ranked outlets in finance and/or economics;
  • a proven ability to manage research projects and research programs, including seeking and obtaining funding for such projects and programs;
  • experience of assembling and compiling original data, building data bases and using data in empirical research in relevant areas;
  • extensive experience as referee for highly ranked international journals, including some experience of editorial tasks for journals or edited volumes;
  • extensive international experience;
  • experience of teaching at highly ranked institutions, including international experience in this regard;
  • experience with engagement with practice both in the form of writing for broader readerships, and in engagement with non-academic audiences in executive teaching or other outreach activities.

The ability to collaborate with colleagues, students and other parties will be taken into account in the overall assessment of both pedagogical skills and scientific skills.
