Your team
Since coming into user operation in 2019, the Bloch beamline has built a reputation as an internationally top-tier facility for performing ARPES experiments, and hosts user groups from across the globe. Bloch has two endstations, one dedicated to high-resolution ARPES with a Scienta DA30 analyzer and the other offering spin-resolved ARPES with a 3D VLEED detector paired with a Specs Phoibos 150 analyzer. The entire beamline team works together to develop and support the operation of the beamline and both endstations.

Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?

MAX IV is looking for a postdoctoral researcher for an initial appointment of 2 years. As a member of the Bloch team, you will contribute to the beamline activities, working to ensure that user beamtimes are as productive as possible and that scientists feel excited when they receive an opportunity to come here. This requires from the beamline team a very strong focus on maintaining the performance of the equipment while simultaneously developing and commissioning new capabilities, new control and analysis software and new research projects. This often occurs in close collaboration with support functions at MAX-IV and external user groups.
As a postdoc at the beamline you will operate within and contribute to this environment, but your principle mandate will be to design and execute an independent research program, to which you will dedicate approximately 50% of your working time. You will have access to a fraction of the in-house beamtime allocation for this, and will also be expected to obtain additional time both at Bloch and elsewhere through conventional competitive beamtime applications.

In order to succeed in this role you will demonstrate motivation and independence. Specifically, you are requested to propose a specific research project that you will undertake in order to produce high quality publications, and you will work diligently to ensure that this project are followed through all the way to publication. While all such projects would be considered, the beamline is particularly interested in projects that would fit to one of the following developmental themes:

  1. Spin resolved ARPES: The spin-resolved endstation is still relatively new, and spin-ARPES is both technically and scientifically challenging. Bloch offers a combination of a 3D-VLEED detector, a small spot-size and access to arbitrary light polarization states of unusually high-purity. We welcome project plans that will lean heavily on some or all of these properties in order to develop and showcase the capabilities of our beamline to the wider community.
  2. vdW heterostructures: A commercial 2D heterostructure transfer system has recently been installed at the beamline. This will allow the deterministic fabrication of interesting sample structures from exfoliable materials (thin flakes, twisted graphene, vdW heterostructures). If such samples can be created at or above the 10um lateral scale, they become accessible to ARPES studies at Bloch. We welcome project plans that would capitalize on the availability of this equipment to showcase what is possible. These may involve applications to the neighbouring MAX-PEEM beamline or to nano-ARPES facilities elsewhere.

More information about Bloch can be found here: https://blochdocs.maxiv.lu.se/

Your main work tasks will be

  • Participate in the beamline operation, including acting as Local Contact for external groups
  • Contribute to the beamline maintenance and development
  • Develop your own research and publish results

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant field, completed not more than 3 years ago
  • Direct experience acquiring and analyzing ARPES data
  • At least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

Below are seen as merits

  • Scripting in Python
  • Hands-on experience with building or servicing ultra-high vacuum environments
  • Experience with scanning tunneling microscopy
  • Experience with spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

As a person you are Independent, motivated, flexible and understanding the challenges of working in a multicultural environment

Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances the PhD can have been completed before the aforementioned three years.

Further information
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment. A postdoctoral fellow is employed under a period of at least two years and at most three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01”).
