Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Physical Geograhy and Ecosystem Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to work on development, testing and application of the Earth system model EC-EARTH coupled to the biosphere model LPJ-GUESS, as part of the Horizon 2020 project CRESCENDO (https://www.crescendoproject.eu/) and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6; http://www.wcrp-climate.org/wgcm-cmip/wgcm-cmip6). The appointee will be affiliated to the Strategic Research Area MERGE, which is a collaboration between Lund University, a number of other Swedish universities and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI (http://www.merge.lu.se).

Work assignment

The successful candidate will carry out development, testing and application of the Earth system model EC-EARTH as part of an international collaboration in the development of the model, and its application as part of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and the next Assessment Report of the IPCC. The research focuses on the biosphere component LPJ-GUESS which simulates vegetation dynamics and carbon exchange between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere in EC-EARTH. Specific tasks include model experiments to study interactions mediated by wildfires, methane, permafrost, land use change and ecosystem nitrogen cycling. The research will be carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and other partners in the European Union Horizon 2020 project CRESCENDO and the Strategic Research Area MERGE (http://www.merge.lu.se). Participation in international meetings and workshops, reporting and communication activities related to the above projects is expected.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in a subject relevant for the appointment. Prior experience is required of working with climate or Earth system models on HPC systems. Applicants must possess documented skills in computer programming, preferably in FORTRAN or the C/C++ language family, and should be familiar with command-language scripting in Unix or Linux environments. An excellent command of written and spoken English is required. Prior experience of the application of climate or Earth System modelling, especially EC-EARTH, to the study of climate dynamics, especially biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks, is a strong advantage, as is experience of biosphere modelling, particularly wildfires, methane, permafrost, land use change and ecosystem nitrogen cycling. Prior contributions to the development of process representations in the the LPJ-GUESS biosphere model would be especially relevant. Emphasis will be placed on the quality and quantity of scientific publications and other academic achievements indicative of emerging independence as a researcher.
