Specialization
The position is associated with the research program Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate (BECC), placed at the Department of Political Science and connected with the Center for Environmental and Climate research (CEC) at the Faculty of Natural Science (http://www.cec.lu.se).  

BECC is a world-leading research environment bringing together excellent research and training at Lund University and the University of Gothenburg, to address society’s growing need for scientific knowledge to inform the consideration of biodiversity and ecosystem services in policy formulation and decision-making, regionally and globally, in the face of a rapidly changing world. http://www.becc.lu.se/about-us  

BECC aims to:
• assess climate change impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services with a particular focus on forest, agricultural and subarctic ecosystems.
• support regional, national and global policymakers through the scientific evaluation of policy options combining adaptation and mitigation strategies to climate change with conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.
• create synergies and added value to the climate impacts research at Lund University and University of Gothenburg by bringing together modelling, empirical ecology, economics and social science analysis, and by integrating stakeholder experience in the research process.

Job Assignments
We are looking for an ambitious political scientist in the beginning of his/her career who aims for a future career as university lecturer and researcher. The term for this position in Swedish is biträdande lektor. The official translation is Associate Senior Lecturer. The position is the equivalent to what in the American university system is called Assistant Professor.  

The successful candidate will conduct research and teach political science at undergraduate and graduate levels. The position includes a minimum of 50 percent research and a maximum of 50 percent teaching and possibly administration which should relate to and strengthen BECC’s research profile. The successful candidate will conduct independent research and enjoys the freedom to choose his or her own research questions, develop his or her own theoretical ideas, and choose the most appropriate methods but will be expected to contribute to BECC in the following ways:

  • Contribute to and strengthen governance and policy research in BECC
  • Take an active part in the multidisciplinary activities within BECC, such as contributing with research proposals, supervise post graduate students and contribute to BECC’s graduate research school
  • Engage in the Environmental Politics Research Group at the Department of Political Science
  • Teach political science in multidisciplinary programs
  • Engage and communicate with stakeholders within and outside Sweden

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To be eligible for the position as Associate Senior Lecturer, the prospective candidate must have been awarded a PhD in political science or have the corresponding research competence. Priority will be given to those who have been awarded a PhD or achieved the corresponding research competence within seven years prior to the deadline for application. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate documented teaching skills. Proficiency in English and to be able to teach in English is a requirement. Ability to conduct independent research and to participate in international research collaboration is a very important eligibility criterion.

Basis of Assessment
Since this is an early career position priority will be given to candidates who have been awarded a PhD within seven years prior to the deadline for applications. The assessment will put weight on (a) research skills, documented through post-doctoral progression and publication in international journals; (b) ability to conduct research independently and to develop research in collaboration with colleagues, domestically as well as abroad; (c) capacity to contribute to BECC’s research program’s overall goals; and (d) teaching experience and pedagogical skills.

Promotion
An Associate Senior Lecturer may apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer with tenure within the subject area of the position, if he or she meets the requirements for promotion and is deemed suitable according to the regulations of the Faculty of Social Sciences. An application shall be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences within three years and six months of the start of the employment. The general assessment criterion is that the applicant must demonstrate strong progress in his or her ability to conduct research and teaching. The assessment criteria for promotion are in this case that the applicant has demonstrated:

    • Well documented research skills that is of significance to the subject and duties of the post. This includes a well-documented national and international standing as a researcher. Particular importance will be attached to a documented ability to publish internationally.
    • Well documented teaching skills. Particular importance will be attached to documented skills in conducting teaching and supervision at different levels, and to development of quality and breadth of teaching competence over time.
    • Progress in academic leadership through an enhanced ability to develop, lead and implement education and research and/or demonstrated leadership/commitment to duties for the university.
    • Documented ability to write applications for external research funding.
    • Ability to interact with society and inform others about research.
    • Proficiency in Swedish sufficient to be able to conduct regularly occurring job assignments within research, teaching and administration.
    • University teacher’s training or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge as is required for employment as Senior lecturer.

      The assessment for promotion will pay equal attention to research and teaching merits.
