Job Assignments
We are looking for a ambitious political scientist at the start of her/his career. The work duties consist of research, with the stated specialisation of the post, and teaching in political science at the undergraduate and Master’s levels. The position is comprised of at least 50 per cent research and no more than 50 per cent tuition and administrative tasks. The research component may amount to 70 per cent in the first three years.

The position is linked to a research project led by Professor Johannes Lindvall at the Lund University Department of Political Science and funded by the Swedish Research Council. The project started in 2017 and is expected to run until 2022. The aim is to conduct comparative and historical research on public services, focusing especially on political conflicts concerning such services. The successful candidate is expected to pursue research contributing to the general aims of the project Polisen, skolan och sjukvården i jämförande och historiskt perspektiv (Policing, schooling, and public health in a comparative and historical perspective) All participants will, however, conduct independent research and will be free to choose their own research topics , develop their own theoretical ideas and apply the research methods they deem best suited. The project is based on a mixed-methods design, meaning that statistical methods as well as case study methods and comparative case studies may be applied.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct high-quality teaching at all levels in political science.

As the project participants are intended to work as a team, they are all expected to have the Department of Political Science in Lund as their main workplace.

Qualifications
A person who has obtained a PhD or an equivalent degree in political science from abroad, or has acquired the equivalent research expertise in other ways, shall be considered eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer. Priority will be given to applicants who have obtained a PhD or acquired the equivalent qualifications no more than seven years prior to the application deadline, unless exceptional circumstances apply.

Assessment criteria
An ability to pursue independent research, participate in international collaboration and engage in interdisciplinary research is of major importance to the position. Applicants must be able to present documentation of their teaching ability. Proficiency in English and an ability to teach in English are required.

The assessment will take into account the applicant’s (a) research expertise and progression, which will be assessed on the basis of the submitted scholarly work,(b) ability to independently conduct and develop research together with other researchers in national and international contexts, (c) ability to contribute to the general aims of the research project Polisen, skolan och sjukvården i jämförande och historiskt perspektiv, and (d) teaching experience and ability.

Promotion
An associate senior lecturer may, on application, be promoted to permanent employment as a senior lecturer. The application must be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences no later than 3 years and 6 months after the date of appointment. The applicant’s eligibility and suitability for such employment will be assessed through a review of the progress they have made during their appointment with regard to research and teaching, focusing on the following criteria:

  • Well-documented research expertise. This includes a proven high standard as a researcher. Special emphasis will be placed on international publication.
  • Well-documented teaching expertise. Special emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s proven ability to conduct teaching and supervision at various levels of study, and that how the quality and breadth of their teaching have developed over time.
  • Progress in academic leadership through an increased ability to develop, manage and conduct education and research and/or demonstrated commitment/leadership in university-wide duties.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to contribute to departmental activities.
  • Documented ability to draft applications for external research funding.
  • Good ability to interact with wider society and to inform about research and development work.
  • Swedish proficiency to the degree necessary for performing regular tasks involved in research, education and administration.
  • Teacher training to the extent required for appointment as senior lecturer.

In the assessment of qualifications for a senior lectureship, equal attention will be paid to the applicant’s teaching and research expertise.
