Duties

The work duties mainly include teaching in the Faculty’s various undergraduate and Master’s programmes. Teaching duties include special responsibility for courses and course administration within the medical degree programme. The appointed applicant will be expected to conduct his or her own qualified research in the field of surgery. In addition, the successful applicant will also be expected to hold internal and external elected office.

Eligibility

Pursuant to Chapter 4 Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a candidate qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer is a person who has demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve. Pursuant to Lund University’s Appointment Rules, the applicant must have undergone at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, in order to be qualified. In case of exceptional circumstances, an applicant who has not undergone at least five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education may still be considered qualified.

Basis for assessment

The applicant must have demonstrated research and teaching expertise of value to the subject area. The assessment will pay particular attention to the applicant’s teaching expertise. The applicant must have demonstrated expertise in both teaching and supervision in undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral education. The assessment will primarily consider teaching quality. Volume, as well as breadth and depth, will also be significant in the assessment. Furthermore, the applicant’s ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching will be taken into account. The ability to link teaching to research will also be considered significant.

In the assessment of research expertise, research quality is of primary significance. The scope and breadth of the applicant’s research expertise will also be assessed. Research includes the supervision of doctoral students, publications and research programmes. The applicant is to have demonstrated the ability to initiate and maintain national and international collaborations with other researchers. Importance will also be ascribed to the applicant’s independent ability to obtain major research grants.

The applicant’s ability for leadership and interaction with wider society will also be considered significant. A good capacity for teamwork is deemed to be a prerequisite for appointment.

To meet general eligibility requirements for teaching staff at Lund University, a candidate must be suitable for the position and possess the general abilities required to perform the duties of the post well.
