The research field

Service studies is an interdisciplinary research field. The third-cycle programme focuses on services and their connection to interpersonal relations and the economic, cultural and social processes that these are generated by and rooted in. Research in service studies may include, but is not limited to, perspectives that problematise leadership and governance issues in relation to service operations, the production and consumption of services and their economic, social and environmental impact, as well as various aspects of the organisation, structure and complexity of services.

The need to understand and explain the economic, cultural, environmental, spatial and social complexity demonstrated by services in our society is growing. In the light of this, the interdisciplinary approach taken in the research in this field is important. An overall goal is for the Department of Service Management and Service Studies to be a vigorous and leading environment for interdisciplinary research about services.  

Duties

The PhD programme consists of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is concluded with the public defence of a doctoral thesis. The appointed doctoral student will receive a salary from the University during four years, and his or her main obligation is to complete their PhD studies, which primarily includes an independently written doctoral thesis. The position may involve departmental duties, mainly in the form of teaching, up to 20 per cent of full time working hours, in which case the appointment will be extended by the equivalent number of hour. The terms of employment for doctoral students are regulated in the Swedish Higher Education ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

The doctoral student is expected to be present and actively participate in the research environment in the department. The doctoral studentship will commence on 1 September 2018 or according to agreement. Eligibility Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who

- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or

- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

To meet the specific entry requirements the applicant must have completed at least 30 second cycle credits within the main field of Service Management or acquired the equivalent knowledge. The applicant must also have completed a master's degree project of at least 15 credits.

Assessment criteria

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance. The applicants will be ranked based on an overall assessment of the quality of their submitted degree projects and papers, research proposal, grades from previous studies, relevant work experience, and personal suitability. As third cycle studies in service Studies are very demanding, the applicant must be highly motivated and able to work independently under time constrains. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is also a requirement. A limited number of applicants will be asked to provide a written work sample during the final stages of the admission process, after which a shortlisted number of applicants will be called to interview.

  • a cover letter in Swedish or English of max 1,000 words, which contains a brief presentation of yourself and your qualifications, as well as a brief explanation of why you are interested in the third cycle programme in Service Studies at Lund University.
  • a CV in Swedish or English that demonstrates your qualifications for the third cycle programme in Service Studies, a degree and grade certificates in Swedish or English,
  • degree projects in Swedish or English at the Bachelor's level and corresponding to at least 15 credits at the Master's level in service Studies or another discipline deemed equivalent,
  • a research proposal in Swedish or English of max 2,000 words including references, containing a description of a research problem and research field, possible research questions and method/s,
  • name and contact information of two personal references, other documentation of relevance to the position.
