Work duties
We are looking for a sociologist or a social anthropologist at the start of her/his career. The work duties consist of research and teaching in sociology and social anthropology on undergraduate and Master’s levels. The position is comprised of at least 40 percent research and no more than 60 percent tuition and administrative tasks.

The work duties include conducting high-quality research in sociology/social anthropology, according to international standards, as well as high-quality teaching at all levels of education. The holder of the position is to actively contribute to the positive development, and the strengthening of research cooperation between sociology and social anthropology, including active work with project applications for external funding. In addition, the holder of the position shall actively participate in the development of joint educational courses offered, including a new Master’s programme in Cultural Criminology. He or she must be able to conduct teaching in both a Scandinavian language and English. 

Qualifications
A person who has obtained a PhD or an equivalent degree in sociology or social anthropology or has acquired the equivalent research expertise in other ways, shall be considered eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer. Priority will be given to applicants who have obtained a PhD or acquired the equivalent qualifications no more than seven years prior to the application deadline. 

Person specification
The applicant is to have a PhD in Sociology or Social Anthropology, or the equivalent research expertise, as well as teaching and research experience in sociology/social anthropology. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of expertise in qualitative methods and ethnographic fieldwork, as well as knowledge in contemporary cultural theory. Experience of cooperation with external actors is also an important merit. The ability to teach in both a Scandinavian language and English is a requirement.

Applicants must also be able to present documentation of their research expertise. Importance will be attached to the applicant’s ability to acquire external funding. The applicant must be able to work independently with both teaching and research in a responsible and structured way. Good interpersonal skills are required. 

Assessment criteria
This is a career development position, which is why applicants who have completed their doctoral degree within the last seven years of the call will be prioritized. In the assessment, special attention will be paid to the applicant’s development potential with regard to their current research expertise, their ability to develop research within the subject area and to obtain external funding. Research expertise includes international publication, independent research, and participation in international cooperation, as well as the development following their PhD. Major emphasis is placed on the applicant’s ability to teach. In addition, emphasis will be placed on how the applicant’s research fit the department’s research profile. The top candidates will be invited to a test lecture, which is also included in the assessment.

An associate senior lecturer may, on application, be promoted to permanent employment as a senior lecturer. The application must be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences no later than 3 years and 6 months after the date of appointment. The applicant’s eligibility and suitability for such employment will be assessed through a review of the progress they have made during their appointment with regard to research and teaching, focusing on the following criteria:

  • Well-documented research expertise. This includes a proven high standard as a researcher. Special emphasis will be placed on international publication, and documented ability to formulate research applications for external funding.
  • Well-documented teaching expertise. Special emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s proven ability to conduct teaching and supervision at various levels of study, and that the quality and breadth of their teaching have developed over time. Training in teaching and learning to an extent necessary for the position of senior lecturer is required.
  • Progress in leadership through an increased ability to develop, manage and conduct training and research and/or demonstrated commitment/leadership in departmental duties.
  • Good ability to interact with wider society and to inform about research and development work.
  • In the assessment of qualifications for a lectureship, equal attention will be paid to the applicant’s teaching and research expertise.

The application is to include a CV, certificates/grade transcripts, a written account of the research and expertise (see instructions on the academic qualifications portfolio), as well as any research publications the applicant would like to have considered (no more than five). The applicant must also include a draft (approx. 3–5 pages) showing what research she/he intends to pursue within the scope of the position and how this research profile can be included in the department’s research profile.
