Subject description

The position is intended for development and applications of applied nuclear techniques (focused ion beams) at the Lund Ion Beam Analysis Facility at the division of Nuclear Physics, Department of Physics. Recently an extensive upgrade of the equipment and analytical possibilities at the facility has been completed, and presently two experimental stations are available for focused ion beam analysis (tIBA and µPIXE). The chambers are both equipped with a number of particle and photon detectors that are operated in parallel via a VME DAQ. A third experimental facility, a tagged fast and thermal neutron station, is under construction and will be used mainly for development and test of thermal neutron detectors. In addition, a separate detection system for low level measurement on neutron activated (geological) samples has been developed and is now in full operation.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Take responsibility for the new nuclear reaction facility and the ion beam geoscience program
  • Participate in the development of new analytical techniques such as isotope NRA techniques
  • Instrumental upgrade and expansion if and when necessary
  • Find new applications for the existing NRA techniques
  • Teaching on advanced level courses related to applied nuclear physics
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than 3 years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience of experimental nuclear techniques especially in applied nuclear physics or ion beam analysis.
  • Experience of accelerator operation and especially IBA applications.
  • Experience of nuclear physics laboratory work.
  • Experience of interdiciplinary research collaborations.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the Ion Beam Analysis subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Experience of IBA including experimental preparation, data acqusition and data analysis.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experience of development of and operation of advanced DAQ systems
  • Experience of simulation and analysis program packages such as GEANT4, RUMP, SRIM, KMax, GeoPIXE, SIMNRA, DataFurnace
  • Experience of fast pulse electronics, timing and trigger formation
  • Experience of object oriented programming (e.g. C++ or Java)
  • Experience of interdiciplinary research projects

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
