Assigned Duties

Those appointed to doctoral studentship shall primarily devote themselves to their studies, aimed to result in a doctoral degree. Work carried out during the studentship consists of participation in research projects as well as successful participation in postgraduate (third-cycle) courses. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may also work, to a limited extent, with educational tasks and administration. However, duties of this kind may not comprise of more than 20 per cent of a full time post.

Eligibility / Entry Requirements

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she has:

  • been awarded a second-cycle degree;
  • satisfied the requirements for courses comprising of at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle;

An applicant is also eligible if he or she has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A person meets the specific admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study program in Economic History if he or she:

  • fulfils the general admission requirements and
  • has documented qualifications worth at least 90 credits in Economic History, as well as an independent project (degree project) in Economic History worth at least 15 credits.

An applicant is also eligible if he or she has acquired the equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad. This could e.g. be studies in Economics, History, Sociology, Economic Geography, Demography or interdisciplinary social sciences programmes.

Other Requirements

A proficient level of English is required in both written and oral communication.

Basis of Assessment

Admittance of a doctoral student is based on an assessment of the candidate’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies. The selection criteria are the breadth, depth, relevance, and independence of the applicant’s earlier work, as well as the applicant’s ability to work independently and participate actively in the research environment.

The assessment of the candidate’s ability is foremost based on previous achievements in first and second cycle studies. Selection may also be based on a research project plan, references, and a personal interview.

Special attention is paid to degree projects and project proposal:

  • ability to describe, question and discuss the current state of research;
  • sufficient clarity and logical coherence in the formulation of the aim and the research questions;
  • adequate selection of theory and methods
  • stringency of reasoning and analysis

Other

The research will be attached to specific project and admission is dependent on the existence of financing in the form of external research funding. We know that funds currently exist within the following six research projects:

- Globalization and the geography of growth – a micro level perspective on Swedish industrialization. The project focuses on the period 1800–1914 and investigates course and causes of industrialization with a new micro-level database containing the universe of Swedish factories and their owners, sources of power, labour force, machinery and production volume/value. Swedish language skills are desirable but not necessary. Knowledge of statistics and experience of working with quantitative methods is required.

- Longer working lives and caregiving across the life course. This project addresses questions about the future supply of unpaid care, as an aging population implies a potential conflict between longer working lives and growing care needs, not least for women who tend to do more caregiving across the life course than men. The project studies the paid and unpaid work of the older adult population as well as family-dynamic processes linked to health shocks and caregiving responsibilities in Sweden and other countries by using administrative and surveys data. Swedish language skills are desirable but not necessary. Knowledge of statistics and experience of working with quantitative methods is required.

- A century of divorce. This project investigates the divorce transition in Sweden 1915–2015 from a macro and a micro perspective using new datasets and statistical methods. It focuses on the role of economic and social factors for the divorce revolution across industrialized nations. Swedish language skills are desirable but not necessary. Knowledge of statistics and experience of working with quantitative methods is required.

- Manufacturing inequality. This project primarily analyzes wages and careers in the past by using a large-scale microdata and statistical methods. The main focus is set on factors and processes creating differences among groups working in Swedish manufacturing at the turn of last century. A gender perspective is relevant for parts of the project. Swedish language skills are desirable but not necessary. Knowledge of statistics and experience of working with quantitative methods is required.

- How welfare shapes our future: Policies targeted at young children and their effects over the full life course – a case study of southern Sweden, 1920 to the present day. This project investigates the effects of the institutionalization of childbirth in hospitals and child-care in day-care centres on individuals’ wellbeing from birth until old age. Swedish language skills are desirable but not necessary. Good statistical knowledge and ability to work with large databases are required.

- Swedes in America: Migrant Selection and Economic Integration in the Age of Mass Migration at the Turn of the 20th Century. The project looks at integration of Swedes in the United States and is based on linked census data. Good statistical knowledge and ability to work with large databases are required.

Type of Employment / Conditions

Limit of tenure, maximum four years (fulltime studies).

For regulations concerning employment of doctoral students, see the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5. Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentship.
