Subject description
In-situ transmission electron microscopy for understanding fundamental processes in semiconductor crystal growth.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and Learning.

The post-doctoral position is part of the project “Controlled atomic scale 3D ordering for exotic electronic phases”, involving researchers from a variety of subject areas within physics, chemistry and materials science. The aim of this project is to study the fundamental formation processes in semiconductor crystal growth at the nanoscale in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The project will utilize a customized TEM integrated with a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipped with gas sources suitable for growth of semiconductor materials. Real-time analysis will be used to understand the processes governing nucleation, selection of crystal structure, and growth of heterostructure materials. Within this project semiconductor nanowires composed of III-V materials will be used as templates for investigating crystal growth at the atomic scale.

Supervision of graduate or postgraduate students may also be part of the work duties.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Doctoral degree within chemistry, materials science, physics or a related subject
  • At least two years of hands-on experience with TEM is essential, as well as solid theoretical understanding of electron microscopy
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of crystal growth/crystallisation, including nucleation processes
  • Good problem-solving and linguistic analytical abilities

The candidate is expected to work independently, but also to interact with with researchers from other parts of the project.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

Experience in any of the following areas will be counted as a merit:
o Conducting experiments using in-situ TEM
o Hands-on experience with crystal growth using CVD or related techniques
o Experience working with semiconductor nanostructures We are looking for a person who is structured, goal-oriented and has good self-awareness. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
