The Division of Solid State Physics has about 20 faculty members and in total 100 employees with research focus on the material science, physics and applications of semiconductor nanostructures in electronics, photonics and biology/medicine. The division is at the heart of NanoLund, the Center for Nanoscience at Lund University, which is world-leading in the materials science and applications of nanostructured semiconductors. Established in 1988, NanoLund engages over 250 scientists from the faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine.

Lund is also the site of two key research facilities for materials science: MAX IV, the world’s brightest synchrotron light source and the European Spallation Source (ESS), the world’s most powerful neutron source. Lund University, MAX IV, ESS and the surrounding ecosystem provides an internationally unique environment for the science, technology and commercialization of nanomaterials.

The Division of Solid State Physics runs NanoLund’s core, the world-class semiconductor nanofabrication facility Lund Nano Lab (LNL) that is part of Myfab – the national infrastructure for micro and nano fabrication. LNL turns over approx. 30 MSEK annually, consists of circa 600 sq. m of clean room with about 80 installed tools, including epitaxial systems, patterning and processing equipment and characterization instruments, and has over 150 users from academia and industry. LNL is currently planning on building a new cleanroom at Science Village Scandinavia to double its capacity. The LNL team includes 11 highly qualified scientists, engineers and technicians. Tasks and responsibilities

The Division of Solid State Physics, LNL, is now seeking a qualified Process Engineer who will be responsible for conducting process, equipment and material improvement projects both in-house and with outside suppliers. This involves exceptional collaboration with other Engineers in the LNL team as well as tool vendors to meet challenging, long-term research goals. You will interface with students, scientists and engineers to provide basic training and support on select processes and equipment, reporting to the Operations Manager of LNL.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Routine baseline process and calibrations on tools in accordance with existing specifications
  • Root cause troubleshooting of processes. User support and ensuring process tools are in ready to use condition
  • In close collaboration with other engineers in the LNL team, improve and expand process performance for all users
  • Work with vendors for technical assistance and support when necessary
  • Prepare process specifications and capabilities and assist or lead in procuring new equipment for LNL
  • Work together with equipment engineers during new equipment installations and with start-up and acceptance testing
  • Establish baseline process strategies in collaboration with other staff members

Requirements and basis of assessment

The position as Process Engineer requires that you have an University degree in a relevant area such as chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science or a similar education. The following documented experiences and qualifications are required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of process development required – lithography or plasma etch experience on semiconductor processing equipment a strong plus
  • Knowledge of basic semiconductor processing principles
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot existing processes and create new ones in order to expand user knowledge and capabilities. This must be based on a thorough understanding of the interdependence of process and hardware.
  • Proficiency in English including the ability to write technical documentation
  • Excellent communication skills and team-oriented approach

Further, these additional qualifications and experience would be beneficial:

  • Hands-on experience with semiconductor process development
  • Experience with lithography and plasma etch processing
  • Ability to perform basic process troubleshooting
  • Ability to operate complicated processing equipment
  • Excellent understanding of the safety hazards associated with operating various cleanroom equipment
