The National Swedish Laboratory for Wood Anatomy and Dendrochronology, which is hosted by the Department of Geology, has recently received central infrastructure support from Lund University as part of an effort of strengthening and renewal aiming at integration of the laboratory’s resources in a national consortium of archaeological laboratories (www.archlab.se). The general aim is to secure sustainable infrastructure support from the Swedish Research Council. In addition, the laboratory participates in a national effort aiming at digitalisation and publication of its stored data in an international database (www.humlab.umu.se/en/research-development/ongoing-projects/visead/), for which funding has been granted from the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences.

Tasks
Following introduction, the successful applicant will take part in the main duties of the laboratory, i.e. age determination of different types of wooden objects of archaeological and cultural historical character (artefacts, historical constructions, ship wrecks, art objects etc.) as well as natural objects, such as wood remains preserved in peat deposits, by means of analysis of tree-ring series and statistical correlation with dendrochronological reference series. To some extent, wood anatomical analysis and species determination can also be involved. In addition, quality control and entry of analogously stored data into an environmental archaeology database form an important part of the position.

Qualifications
A BSc. degree or equivalent within one of the following subjects is required for the employment:

  • Archaeology
  • Geoarchaeology
  • Geology, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, Forestry or other natural scientific subject in combination with studies and/or a genuine interest in Archaeology and Cultural Sciences
  • Cultural Sciences with a specialisation within Architectural History

Experience of stereo-microscopic analysis and correlation of tree-ring records is required. Experience of archaeological and architectural historical investigation work and report writing is considered as an asset. Experience of database work and extensive experience of data handling in the software Excel are additional merits. Proficiency in Swedish is an asset but not a requirement.

As a person you are thorough and have a sense for problem solving. You are easy to work with and you can handle a certain amount of stress.
