Work Description
This work will be a part of the InDeV project (https://www.indev-project.eu/). The project’s goal is to improve traffic safety for vulnerable road users (mainly pedestrians and bicyclists). An important part of this project is filming traffic situations across Europe and identifying dangerous situations. Knowledge gathered by this and future projects can be used to design safer traffic environments.

There currently exist Python code for running a fairly complex application using convolutional neural networks for automated traffic analysis. In order to make this code practically usable for traffic researchers, the applicant write a program which works as a bridge between the existing code and a web interface. This interface will mainly, but not entirely, use some kind text-based API where tasks to be run can be specified. The applicant’s task will be to design the web interface, backend code and the text-based API.

This work will be done in close collaboration with parts of LTH that are working in the InDeV project, both in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences and Transport and Roads.

The project work ends at the latest 31 October 2018. We aim at a starting date of 30 April, 2018. It may be possible to take into account the applicant’s preferences about when and how long this project will be.

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of programming, for example from one of these courses: EDAA50/EDAA55/EDA011/EDA017 or equivalent (Introductory course in Programming).
  • Knowledge and experience of basic web technology: creation of interactive web pages (HTML, Javascript) that can communicate with backend-code (PHP, Python or similar)
  • Basic knowledge of Python
  • Good ability to learn about new programming environments and tools

Other qualifications

  • Additional experience, knowledge and courses in the field of programming
  • Knowledge and experience of Docker

We will emphasize how the applicant personally suits the tasks. We will take into account good skills in collaboration, personal drive and autonomy as well as how we believe the applicant, through experience and competence, is able to complete the tasks.

Conditions
The work is limited in time, for around 6 months, starting 2018-04-30 or by agreement. There is some flexibility in when, how long and in what pace the work will be done, based on the applicant’s ability to get the work done in time.

Instructions on how to apply
The application should contain a personal letter stating why you are interested in the employment and how the employment matches your merit. The application should also contain a CV, diploma or equivalent, and other items of relevance (copies of grades, references, recommendation letters, etc.). The application can be in either Swedish or English.

Should the applicant want a more detailed description of the work, the applicant is encouraged to contact Martin Ahrnbom at martin.ahrnbom@math.lth.se for more information.
