Lunds universitet, MAX IV, MX group

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

MAX IV Laboratory recently received funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (http://novonordiskfonden.dk/en) for a new beamline called MicroMAX (https://www.maxiv.lu.se/micromax/), a micro-focus macromolecular crystallography beamline. MicroMAX will exploit new sample delivery methods and the unique performance of the MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring to provide new possibilities in collecting high quality structural data from microcrystals.

MicroMAX will build on the rapid development of serial crystallography that is presently attracting great interest within the structural biology community. MicroMAX will not only increase the probability of obtaining structural data from challenging projects where only microcrystals are available but also enable data collection at room temperature and time resolved experiments with a time resolution down to the microsecond range.

We are now looking for a Research Engineer to the MX group to participate in the build-up of MicroMAX and take the lead for certain engineering projects, in particular concerning sample delivery and optics. During the operation of MicroMAX the Research Engineer will in particular work with the sample delivery systems.

Tasks

Responsible for defined engineering projects at MicroMAX as needed, in particular related to the sample environment / experiment setup and the optics. The tasks include:

During the construction phase:
- Drive and take responsibility for relevant engineering projects, including but not limited to sample delivery setups and the beamline optics.
- Take part in commissioning experiments at BioMAX or at other instruments during the development of MicroMAX, and at a later stage at MicroMAX.

In the operation phase:
- Take responsibility of defined sub-systems of the beamline, in particular sample delivery setups.
- Share responsibilities for operation, maintenance and further development of the beamline in close collaboration with the team of scientists and engineers of the MX-group and MAX IV staff.

Qualifications

Required qualifications are:
- PhD or engineering degree in a relevant subject
- Experience of managing instrumentation projects
- Solid knowledge of mechanical engineering
- Experience of synchrotron radiation instrumentation
- A demonstrated ability to work independently
- Excellent command of English, well-developed communication skills and team working skills.

Desirable additional qualifications:
- Solid experience in the planning, design/construction/procurement, operation and maintenance of complex scientific equipment in particular such equipment that is of relevance for MicroMAX.
- Experience of X-ray optics and its integration into setups such as synchrotron radiation beamlines.
- Experience of 3D-CAD/CAM
- Experience of microfluidic design, development and use
- Experience of nano-positioning systems
- Experience of laser systems
- Interest and experience in scientific use of techniques of interest for MicroMAX (i.e. experiments, data analysis, publication and presentation of results).

Probationary period may apply.
