Job description

The post comprises teaching and research in human geography in general, and specialised in development geography. Thirty per cent of the post is made up of government-funded research and 70 per cent is teaching, including any administrative duties. The proportion of research can be expanded through external research funding. 

In addition to conducting high-quality research and education in development geography, the successful candidate is expected to be able to take responsibility for the development and administration of study programmes and courses in the field of human geography in general. Teaching may include tasks/courses in quantitative as well as qualitative methods.

Qualifications

To qualify for appointment as an associate senior lecturer, you must have been awarded a PhD in human geography and economic geography or development studies. Priority should be given to those who have been awarded a PhD or achieved the corresponding research competence within five years prior to the deadline for applications. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate documented teaching competence. The criteria for assessment of applications are a good ability to develop and carry out research of high quality, and teaching competence in human geography and economic geography in general and in development geography in particular. The ability to interact with society and to inform people about research and development work is also taken into account. Teaching may take place in both Swedish and English. A successful candidate who is not a native speaker of Swedish is encouraged by the department to acquire and, in the long run, master proficiency in Swedish. An additional requirement is the ability to teach in English. 

Research and teaching experience in one or more fields of relevance to the post’s specialisation in development geography is particularly desirable. An ability to use both quantitative and qualitative methods is another desirable qualification.

Promotion

An associate senior lecturer shall be promoted, on application, to an indefinite-term post as a senior lecturer if he or she is qualified for the post and is judged to be suitable in an assessment of the application in accordance with the eligibility and assessment criteria laid down by the faculty for promotion to senior lecturer and listed in the vacancy notice/person specification. An associate senior lecturer may only apply for promotion once. An application shall be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences within three and a half years of the start of the candidate’s employment.

The general assessment criterion is that the applicant must demonstrate strong progress in his or her ability to conduct teaching and research. The assessment criteria for promotion are in this case that the applicant has demonstrated:

  • well documented research competence that is of significance to the subject and duties of the post. This includes a good documented national and international standing as a researcher. Particular importance will be attached to a documented ability to publish internationally.
  • well documented teaching competence. Particular importance will be attached to documented skills in conducting teaching and supervision at different levels and to development of quality and breadth of teaching competence over time.
  • progress in academic leadership through an enhanced ability to develop, lead and implement education and research and/or demonstrated leadership/commitment to duties for the department as a whole.
  • documented ability to write applications for external research funding.
  • good ability to interact with society and inform others about research and development work.
  • other personal qualities of importance to carry out the duties of the post well.
  • where appropriate, sufficient proficiency in Swedish to be able to teach in Swedish.
