Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The lung bioengineering and regeneration (LBR) group focuses on ex vivo modelling and molecular pathomechanisms of chronic lung diseases. A major interest of the group is to explore molecular mechanisms that contribute to the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The LBR group is looking for a motivated doctoral candidate that will seek to understand the role of the deranged matrix components induced by environmental insults such as pollution and cigarette smoke on the development of COPD and to identify if the matrix may be a new druggable target for COPD. A suitable candidate will display the ability to work independently, to handle several projects simultaneously, and the ability to work well in a team in addition to familiarity and technical knowledge and experience with environmental insults.

Work duties

The main objectives for the doctoral candidate will be to conduct research education, which includes participation in and development of research projects but also to master graduate courses and state-of-the-art techniques.

The aim of the project is to identify novel molecular mechanisms in COPD pathogenesis associated with environmental insults. Thus, the doctoral candidate will perform cell culture experiments including, but not limited to, cell isolation from mouse and human tissues, 2D cell culture, 3D organoid co-cultures, ex vivo 3D tissue cultures, and in vivo animal experiments. The candidate will also perform basic laboratory techniques such as immunoblotting, immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescences and several types of gel electrophoresis.

Qualifications

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
