Work assignments
Research in acute and chronic airway infections in cystic fibrosis

PI Lisa Påhlman

Project description
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by progressive lung function decline due to chronic bacterial colonisation of the lungs and frequent airway infections. The present project focuses on the CF pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Achromobacter xylosoxidans, with the aim to use molecular methods including genomics and cell infection models to characterise virulence factors involved in the establishment of acute and chronic airway infections. In particular, the role of Type 3 secretion and Twin-arginine translocation systems will be explored.

The Postdoctoral position will be placed at Lund University, Sweden, in affiliation with The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) at Umeå University. The intended project will be done in collaboration with Professor Åke Forsberg and other research groups at MIMS/UCMR (www.mims.umu.se; www.ucmr.umu.se).

Qualifications
PhD degree, no earlier than three years before the date of advertisement (max 3 years). This period is extended correspondingly by parental leave, clinical service, and certain commissions of trust. This is a qualifying appointment with primary orientation in research. The position is as an initial step in career and ranking of qualified applicants will be based on their scientific merits and future potential as scientist.

The ideal candidate should have a PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, or microbiology (or equivalent). The candidate should have excellent skills in molecular biology, including bacterial genetics for generation of specific mutants and expression of recombinant proteins, as well as experience of work with cell culture infection models and clinical bacterial isolates.

Experience from bioinformatics and genome based searches as well as genomic methods is a merit.

The candidate should be proficient in written and oral communication in English and is expected to work both independently and as part of an interactive team.

Please, apply online (max 5 pages) containing:

  • a personal cover letter describing relevant experience and research interests, and why you are interested in working with MIMS and the affiliated Clinical Research Fellow Lisa Påhlman
  • a Curriculum Vitae including methods that the applicant has mastered,
  • names and e-mail addresses at least three references, with stated professional relationship with the applicant.

Applications should be written in English.

Questions can be addressed to Lisa Påhlman lisa.pahlman@med.lu.se.

We look forward to receiving your application!

About the research group
Dr. Lisa Påhlman works as a physician at the clinic for infectious diseases in Lund, and has a research group at the Biomedical Centre at Lund University. The research interests include different aspects of airway infections in cystic fibrosis patients and lung transplant recipients. The combination of patient samples, clinical bacterial isolates, and laboratory techniques are important for many of the projects. The purpose and aims of the research include;

  • Characterization of host-pathogen interactions in the airways at the molecular level.
  • Identification of biomarkers for the detection of acute airway infections in these patients.
  • Molecular characterisation of virulence factors involved in the establishment of acute and chronic airway infections.
  • Epidemiologic characterization of airway microbiological findings, and their role in lung function decline.

About MIMS and the MIMS Clinical Research Fellows (CRF) Programme:
The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden, (MIMS, www.mims.umu.se), is the Swedish node in the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine (www.embl.de/research/partnerships/remote/nordic/). MIMS consists at the moment of 21 research groups and in total 150 scientists including around 50 Postdocs, 40 PhD students, 11 Clinical Research FellWe follow the EMBL model for recruitment and evaluation of young group leaders and postdoctoral fellows and collaborate with our Nordic Partners and the EMBL.

MIMS is integrated in the interdisciplinary research consortium Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (www.ucmr.umu.se) with access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure.

In order to strengthen clinical research and more closely incorporate preclinical and clinical research, MIMS decided in 2009 to initiate a programme for Clinical Research Fellows. The intention is to connect existing, mostly preclinical research projects closer to the clinic and to offer resources corresponding to half-time research positions for two years for young clinicians and a two years funding of a postdoctoral fellow who is affiliated to both the research group of the CRF and to a research group at MIMS. Thereby MIMS will strengthen clinical research in infectious diseases and contribute to a fruitful translational interaction between clinicians and MIMS research programs.
