Subject description
Concerns about sustainability of the natural sources made biotechnology as one of the main key factors towards bioproducts from renewable resources. Biotechnology is defined as using advance and high techniques to utilize renewable resources by microorganisms and produce or upgrade higher value products.

The area of the research study subject is:

  1. biotechnical methods which aids in fractionating of biomass components (see specification below) without too much losses or destruction of other fractions, building possibilities to sequentially combine one technology with additional steps aiming for another fraction in a cascade process.
  2. Development of microbial and enzymatic methods for production of value added chemicals.
  3. Development downstream processes and purification methods and working with different analytical instruments (as specified below).

Work duties

  • Fractionation and analysis of different components and polysaccharides of a macroalgae including fucoidans and polyphenols and also separation and purification of proteins from oat using different techniques such as solvent extraction, super critical CO2 extraction and size exclusion columns, enzymatic assays.
  • Analysis of the components using HPLC, GC, FPLC, and mass spectrometry.
  • Cultivation and fermentation of microorganisms both in flask and bioreactor for production of value added chemicals.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies as well as supervision of degree projects and doctoral students. You have opportunity for training in higher education teaching and learning.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in Biotechnology or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Experience from biomass fractionation, composition and carbohydrate analysis, especially in the field of macroalgae analysis and fractionation and in fractionation and analysis of cereal components.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
Fixed-term employment, 2 years, 100 %
