Lund University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

We are recruiting highly motivated young scientist at the PhD-level! Applicants with an international research experience and strong background in molecular biology/immunology/developmental biology are encouraged to apply. You will be most welcome in a young, friendly and dynamic environment. See below PhD-position detailed.

The successful candidates will be part of the novel laboratory for Cell, Tissue and Organ engineering. The laboratory is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM LU), at the Lund Faculty of Medicine (https://www.med.lu.se/english). Focusing on regenerative medicine (regeneration, replacement and repair), WCMM LU is part of a national effort to strengthen Sweden as a world-leading life  science  nation (https://www.med.lu.se/wcmm).

Our lab aims at deciphering the cellular & molecular mechanisms occurring during phases of bone formation/repair. Using state-of-the-art 3D culture systems, death-inducible human mesenchymal lines and tissue engineering protocols, we focus on studying processes of cartilage/bone/bone marrow establishment in human(ized) contexts. Compiled knowledge will be used for the design of cell-based but cell-free extracellular matrices, to be used as smart-materials for skeletal repair. As such, the lab covers both fundamental and translation research aspects. The lab is located within the BioMedical Center of the Faculty of Medicine and is part of Lund University (Sweden). More information available on our website: www.bourginelab.com.

Work assignments
PhD studies in the project "Study of the remodeling process of human tissue-engineered cartilage into bone organs".

The candidate will exploit human mesenchymal lines capable of generating human bone organs in mice. This is achieved by in vitro engineering of cartilage tissue, undergoing remodeling into bone and bone marrow upon in vivo implantation. This recapitulation of the endochondral ossification pathway will be used as a platform/model to study processes of bone formation and repair. Specifically, the candidate is expected to help decoding the cellular events associated with the formation of a human bone organ. This will include the quantitative identification of endothelial, osteoprogenitor and immune cell populations recruited upon tissue transplantation, and the assessment of their role in the remodeling process.

Qualifications
You are finishing or have just finished your Master degree in Biology, Biotechnology or Biomedicine and you are strongly interested in academic research. You are dynamic person with a strong and healthy ambition to discover.

You should have a good command of the English language, both in speaking and writing. Experience in molecular biology, cell culture and flow cytometry/immunostainings are strong assets. The capacity to work with animals is mandatory.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
