Project description

Bacteria play a fundamental role in the biosphere and are found almost everywhere. This basic research project concerns how bacteria cope with the unfavorable conditions that are the rule in natural ecosystems where adaptation to stress situations are crucial for survival. The objective is to provide an understanding of systems involved in sensing and adaptation to environmental (chemical)- and energy (metabolic)-stress. The focus is on molecular mechanisms of proteostasis, and sensing of oxidative- and redox stress. Model systems as well as medically and biotechnology relevant bacteria are addressed. The PhD project will build on currently ongoing work to further investigate themechanism and regulation of stress-associated proteins.

Required qualifications

• Master’s degree in Molecular Biology that includes Microbiology.

• High ambitions to perform top quality research.

• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are prerequisites.

• Ability to work independently and at the same time to be able to interact with other researchers is very important.

• Practical experience from working with gram-positive bacteria is a merit.

• Practical experience of microscopy and with molecular and biochemical techniques such as for example, PCR, cloning, and transformation is required.

Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
