Lund University School of Economics and Management is accredited by the three largest and most influential accreditation institutes for business schools: EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. Only just over 100 business schools in the world have achieved this prestigious Triple Crown accreditation.

We are hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow in the research project ‘Golden years. Understanding the retirement business in pre-modern Europe, c.1250-c.1800’. The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council with a four year Research Grant and is based at the Department of Economic History at Lund University.

The project is led by Dr. Jaco Zuijderduijn. The main objective of the research project is to understand how people prepared for old age in pre-modern Europe, which options they had at their disposal for living their final years, and to what extent an increasingly mobile population required commercial retirement schemes to make arrangements for old age.

The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to do a case study into old age and retirement in Leiden, a major textile-producing centre in the Dutch Republic, covering c. 1500–1800. The candidate will work with old archival sources and should develop a research plan that will make the results from the case study also applicable to pre-modern urban populations elsewhere in Europe. The candidate is expected to conduct independent research, and to cooperate with the project leader in writing articles.

The Fellow will also be able to conduct independent research in Economic History. She/he must be willing to interact with students at the Department of Economic History and to participate actively in the common activities of the Department. The position involves a limited amount of teaching and/or supervision of Bachelor and Master's Theses, maximum 20%.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

To be qualified for employment as Postdoctoral Fellow, an individual must hold a PhD in Economic History or related discipline (e.g. Economics, Sociology, Economic Geography, Statistics, History) awarded no more than three years ago (unless the applicant has been on parental leave or leave due to illness). Applications will also be accepted from persons who have not yet completed their PhD, but this condition must be satisfied at the time of employment.

Basis of Assessment

Scholarly proficiency is the main requirement for employment. The candidate must have demonstrated a high degree of research expertise as manifested in the quality of the PhD dissertation and/or publications. Knowledge of Old Dutch language and sources would be an advantage.

The evaluation will take personal qualities, such as academic independence, willingness to collaborate, and communication skills, into consideration.

Terms of employment
