Lund University, Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics announces a three-month's project assistant position within the topic of theoretical particle  physics. The successful applicant will work within the project "QCD Phenomenology and Event Generator Development" funded by the Swedish Research Council. The overarching goal of the project is the increased understanding of high energy particle collisions involving heavy nuclei and to develop a full event generator program for such collisions. Researchers with experience and background in theoretical or experimental particle physics with emphasis on phenomenological studies of high-energy particle collisions can apply.

Description of work

The project assistant will work with the computer program "Rivet" that facilitates the comparison between simulated particle collisions and experimental data collected e.g at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In particular the assignments will focus on the development and implementation of computer code to better deal with particle collisions involving heavy ions.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD in theoretical or experimental particle physics and a documented background in the simulation of high-energy particle collisions and the comparison of these with experimental data. The applicant must also have documented experience with the Rivet program. Experience with developing code for this program is a clear advantage.

Application procedure

The application should contain:

- A cover letter describing your background and motivation for
  applying for the position
