In this tenure track position call (Wallenberg Molecular Medicine Fellow) we are addressing outstanding young scientists with international research experience.

The position is located within the Faculty of Medicine. Departmental placement will be determined at the time of appointment. The position is timed limited to four years According to Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the possibility for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Background
The initiative to the Wallenberg Centres for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) was taken in 2014 by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) by means of a significant investment over ten years for young researchers in four research centres at the universities of Lund, Gothenburg, Umeå and Linköping.

The Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine at Lund University has its focus on Regenerative Medicine (restoration of normal cell-, tissue- and organ function by regeneration, replacement, and repair).

In the current broad call, we seek a candidate within the field “Molecular Medicine with emphasis on Regenerative Medicine”. Further specialisation within the field described above can be related to one of our eight key areas below (not conditional): The endocrine system, The respiratory system, The hematopoietic system, The Heart/Vasculature system, The musculoskeletal system, The nervous system, Regulation in regenerative medicine, Medical structural biology.

The successful candidate will, after approval by the WCMM steering group, receive a career package of two doctoral student positions (2x4 year) and two postdoc positions (2x2years) as well as an operational grant of SEK 1.5 million per year for four years.

The interaction between WCMM and the university health care in Region Skåne is crucial. Skåne University Hospital in Malmö-Lund is one of the largest hospitals in Sweden with more than 12000 employees providing all aspects of medicine from primary to highly specialized health care services. The hospital has a long tradition of advanced medical research and education. Integrated research environments will later be created by the opening of a 50% clinical research position at Region Skåne in the same focus area as described above.

Job description
The ideal candidate is expected to initiate and maintain a strong experimental research program in synergy with on-going preclinical and clinical research at the faculty within the field “Molecular Medicine with emphasis on Regenerative Medicine”.

The candidate is also expected to take active part in interactions and exchange programs between the Wallenberg Centres in Molecular Medicine at Lund, Gothenburg, Linköping and Umeå (see http://wcmm.se/) as well as with the Science for Life Laboratories in Stockholm /Uppsala (see https://www.scilifelab.se/).

The successful candidate will primarily be conducting research and research supervision. 15 % of the employment is devoted to teaching at the faculty from graduate to postgraduate level so that the criteria for promotion to a tenure position as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor can be fulfilled within four years. Other duties may be added. 

Qualifications
According to Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Higher Education Ordinance and local collective agreement on career development reg. no PE 2013/365, a person is qualified for appointment if the applicant holds a PhD or has corresponding research expertise. Priority should be given candidates who have completed their degree or achieved the corresponding competence no more than 5 years before the last date for applications.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer
An Associate Senior Lecturer is to be appointed on application to a permanent position as Senior Lecturer if he or she has required qualifications and is deemed to be suitable with reference to the qualifications and assessment criteria for promotion and appointment as Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine. The assessment will be made no later than 3 years and 8 months after the start of the Associated Senior Lecturer position.

Basis for assessment
We expect the successful candidate to become one of the future research leaders at the Medical Faculty in cooperation with already active research groups within “Molecular Medicine with emphasis on Regenerative Medicine”.

We are seeking highly motivated individuals with documented international research experience, a demonstrated potential for creativity and a high degree of excellence in the field. The candidate will be evaluated with regard to: 1) The scientific excellence. 2) Teaching credentials. 3) Administrative skills.

Particular weight will be given to scientific excellence. Emphasis will, in addition, be placed on the candidates’ personal suitability and the candidates’ potential to become eligible for a Senior Lecturer position within the time frame of the associate senior lecturer position.

Specific assessment criteria are given below:

1) The scientific excellence
Independently performed experimental research within the area, including publications at a high scientific level and grants achieved in strong competition. Novelty of the scientific approach, giving added value to the existing research at the faculty within the field. Several years of research in an international environment, preferably outside Sweden, is a very strong merit.

2) Teaching credentials
A further merit is pedagogical skills in planning, execution, and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination.

3) Administrative skills
Evaluation is also made on the basis of documented administrative skills, including leadership, research supervision, ability to plan, develop and maintain research group organization, and the ability to interact with the surrounding society.
