Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
Uncertainty about how rain is formed causes problems when representing the effects from clouds in simulations of weather and climate, which introduces errors. The proposed project will answer these questions: (1) What is the balance between the two precipitation mechanisms for ice and liquid phase in a given cloud? (2) How is the balance dependent on the major environmental factors (e.g. those controlling cloud basin temperature)? (3) How does the balance between precipitation mechanisms affect the intensity of charge separation and lightning frequency in storm?
Such issues will be addressed in this meteorological research using numerical models.
Tasks
The work will involve numerical modelling. Individual clouds will be simulated with our aerosol-cloud models. After validation of the simulations, various analyses of precipitation production and lightning from charging in ice-ice collisions will be performed. This will involve coding with FORTRAN 90 in a UNIX environment.
Qualifications
Researchers with a strong background in numerical modeling with knowledge about mesoscale meteorology are encouraged to search.
Requirements:
In the application, applicants should provide evidence of how they meet these requirements.
