Job description

A PhD-position is available for experimental investigations of molecular-based systems for solar energy conversion, with particular focus on Earth-abundant materials such as photo-functional iron-based complexes. Investigations of photophysical and photochemical properties of new molecular systems will be conducted by means of a state-of-the-art combination of steady state and time-resolved spectroscopy methods. Key aspects for the project include accurate detection of excited states in the studied materials and identification of their properties and dynamics. The processes of the excited state energy relaxation, in particular, internal conversion and intersystem crossing, photoinduced intra- and inter-molecular charge and energy transfer and charge transport in materials for solar energy conversion and in functional devices will be addressed in the PhD study. Developing fundamentally new insight into molecular properties and solar energy conversion capabilities of new materials with unconventional photophysical and photochemical properties currently under active development will be a key part of the research. The experimental work will be conducted in close collaboration with synthetic and theoretical groups in the Department of Chemistry at Lund University dedicated to developing and characterizing novel molecular systems for solar energy conversion and related photochemical applications.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD-student with a very strong background in chemistry, physics, material science or equivalent. A profound understanding of molecular spectroscopy is required for the position, and aptitude in time-resolved spectroscopy and femtosecond laser operation is particularly welcomed. A successful candidate must have excellent general chemical and molecular physics competence. Good collaborative abilities and a keen interest in deep understanding of molecular photophysics and photochemistry will be imperative to success in the collective and cross-disciplinary research environment involving both experimental and theoretical collaborators. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. The applicants should provide their CV, publication list (if appropriate), description of any research experience, motivation letter that justifies why they want to start PhD education at Lund University and how this particular research project matches their own interests and scientific background, and ideally one or two academic recommendation letters with the detailed contact information to the persons providing the references.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who:

- have completed a second-cycle degree

- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or

- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
