Laser based combustion diagnostics directed towards non-linear optical techniques with focus on development and application

Work duties

Employment as an associate senior lecturer is a career development position and  aims for the holder to develop his or her independence as a researcher and educator. The work duties mainly involve research and teaching. The position shall include the opportunity for five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The purpose of the work is to develop and apply non-linear optical techniques, and especially for studies of molecules that absorb in the infrared part of the spectrum. The techniques that mainly will be studied are Polarization Spectroscopy, PS, Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing, DFWM, and Laser-induced Grating Spectroscopy, LIGS. The activities will be fundamental studies of these techniques as well as application together with external parties, e.g. different industries.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to associate senior lecturer requires that the applicant has

  • a PhD, or acquired corresponding research expertise.

Priority should be given to applicants who have completed their degree or acquired the corresponding expertise no more than five years before the last date for applications.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience and knowledge in non-linear optics
  • Good knowledge in laser-based combustion diagnostics using non-linear optics with documented experience from PS, DFWM and LIGS
  • Experience from applications in the IR spectral region, in terms of laser/optics, detectors, e.g. frequency mixing, ways to increase the IR sensitivity and suitable spectroscopy
  • Ability to plan and execute research projects in an independent way and with external partners
  • Experience as post doctor  or relevant experience from industry and/or public sector
  • Experience of other research environment than where the applicant will be active

Assessment criteria

For appointments to associate senior lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Experience from international work
  • Experience from interdisciplinary work
  • Good ability to collaborate and independence.

Consideration will also be given to ability to co-operate, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 4 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with Chapter 4 Section 12a§ HEA.

Promotion to senior lecturer in Physics

During the period of employment, an associate senior lecturer can apply for appointment to a permanent position as senior lecturer if he or she has the required qualifications listed below, and is deemed to be suitable. An associate senior lecturer can only apply for promotion once.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

  • A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means.

Additional requirements:

  • Progression in scientific and educational skills
  • Good ability to actively, independently and successfully apply for external financing
  • Ability to contribute to innovation and regeneration of the organisation
  • Ability to supervise/assist in the supervision of students at different levels
  • Oral and written proficiency in Swedish ,

Assessment criteria

When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise.

For appointments to senior lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.
