Lund University, LTH,

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics. www.fysik.lu.se/english.

Excellence in academia through gender equality

At LTH, we believe heterogeneous groups contribute to create more creative environments – an important element when we together explore and create to benefit the world.

We aim to be an attractive employer for candidates whose gender is underrepresented and we work hard to achieve equality at the Faculty of Engineering, Lund University. With this end in view, we are now making a long-term commitment to inspire more women to engage in male dominated research areas, and vice versa.

We offer to all of our new and recently employed associate senior lecturers an appealing career program – LTH Career Academy – that will support the participants in their career path within academia and strengthen their teaching and leadership skills.

Scope

Full time

Subject

Experimentel atomic physics, aimed towards spectroscopy with ultrashort, coherent light pulses from infrared to extreme ultraviolet.

Subject description

Experiments aiming to generate, control and apply coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light to control ultrafast processes. The coherent XUV light may be produced either through high-order harmonic generation or at free electron laser facilities.

Work duties

Employment as an associate senior lecturer is a career development position and  aims for the holder to develop his or her independence as a researcher and educator. The work duties mainly involve research and teaching. The position shall include the opportunity for five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Project management within the research area
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Course responsibilities
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Develop an international research network
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to associate senior lecturer requires that the applicant has

  • a PhD, or acquired corresponding research expertise.

Priority should be given to applicants who have completed their degree or acquired the corresponding expertise no more than five years before the last date for applications.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Documented experience of XUV spectroscopy
  • Documented experience of high-order harmonic generation, driven by laser pulses of different wavelengths
  • Documented experience of experiments at free electron lasers in the XUV and/or x-ray region
  • Experiences from research at an other university then Lund university
  • Experiences as a postdoc or corresponding experiences from industy

Assessment criteria

For appointments to associate senior lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Teaching experiences are considered to be a merit

The applicants ability to develop and conduct research will mainly be judge based on the ability to perform research within the specific research area, together with the demonstrated ability to perform independent research and formulate scientific problems. This specifically includes demonstrated experimental experiences of high-order harmonic generation and the use of ultrashort, coherent XUV pulses to study coherent optical processes. Experience of control of coherent XUV light (either from free electron lasers or through high-order harmonic generation) will be central in the ranking of the applications.

The evaluation of the pedagogical skills will be based on teaching at basic and advance level courses and the supervision of master students and PhD students.

Other important characteristics of the applicant includes creativity, curiosity, and the ability to work both independently and in a group. Both oral and written communication are both important qualifications.
