The research unit for Molecular Medicine, Regeneration, Replacement and Repair in Cancer at the Division of Oncology and Pathology is looking for a post-doctoral candidate with a recently obtained PhD in a cell biology related field.

The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms by which the physical and biochemical environment in our body affect cellular functions and get misregulated in cancer. We are currently looking for a candidate who will conduct research investigating the role of the tumor extracellular matrix in regulating metabolism pathways in cells. Specifically, the candidate will investigate the role of the mechanical characteristics of the matrix on integrin activation and its effects on regulating canonical metabolism pathways including AMPK and mTor pathways. Using a combination of biophysical approaches and microscopy, the candidate will decipher the mechanisms by which cancer cells upregulate certain pathways in response to changing environments. This study will help discover novel pathways and therapeutic strategies in targeting cancer metastasis.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Work assignments

The candidate will perform the following duties in the lab:

  • Conduct analysis of genomic data sets in the literature to look at potential correlations between cellular metabolic pathways and integrin/cytoskeleton pathways in different cancer model systems.
  • Based on the analysis, the candidate will choose an appropriate cancer model system and do routine cell culturing, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, imaging, 3D cultures and quantitative microscopy based to investigate the mechanisms.
  • The candidate will be required to participate in lab meetings, house seminars as well as present data in these meetings and seminars. In addition, the candidate will be required to participate and contribute intellectually and in-effort to other projects of the lab as well as contribute to the general functioning of the lab. The candidate will also be an active member of the research Environment at BMC and participate in its regular functioning.
  • The candidate will be encouraged to participate in atleast one scientific conference a year and present the results in this setting.

Qualifications

PhD in any of the following/related fields: Cell Biology, Cancer Biology, Biomedicine, Physiology, Clinical Sciences, Biophysics is required.

The candidate should have experience with the following techniques: Cell culture of cell lines and primary cultures, Cellular biochemistry, PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, Fluorescence microscopy, ELISA, Cloning and transfection, Bioinformatics. In addition, the candidate must have contributed to atleast 2 scientific publications during their PhD period.

Additional skills preferred but mot required: Lentiviral transductions, co-culture systems, cytoskeletal and adhesion biology, cellular metabolism coursework/research.

Candidate with a Bachelor degree which includes a thesis project in biological sciences is preferred. Presentations at International scientific conferences and mentoring of students is meritorious..

The applicant is expected to be an independent thinker, team player with self-Confidence/Self-motivated and organized task manager.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.

Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years.
