Lund University, Centre for Environmental and Climate research

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoc to support the interdisciplinary research project "Climate costs of boreal forest clear-cutting – a multiscale experiment (CORE)".

The research is focussed at Norunda, the forest research site with one of Europe's longest record of carbon dioxide exchange between forested land and atmosphere (www.icos-sweden/station_norunda.html). We will pursue changes of greenhouse gas sinks and sources due to an impending major clear-cut by integrating state-of-the-art measurement and modelling techniques spanning several temporal and spatial scales. The project will provide essential scientific information for policy recommendations regarding forest management practices, and also ultimately reduce the inherent uncertainty of the earth’s greenhouse gas budgets and climate predictions.

The Postdoc, with guidance from the project lead investigators, will take charge of preparing and executing geophysical and hydrogeological field surveys and numerically create 3D-images of the subsurface geological structure and groundwater dynamics. She/he will further determine key drivers for large greenhouse gas emissions and storage in soils and will publish results in high-quality journals. The post is based in Lund, but includes frequent fieldwork at Norunda (30 km north of Uppsala).

We offer an inspiring and interdisciplinary working environment within an international and experienced project team from Lund University (CEC, Biology and INES), and Swansea (UK) and Helsinki (FI) universities, with excellent opportunities for scientific interactions and career development. The project is embedded within an international network of scientists (ICOS, FLUXNET, NordSpec, AIMES).

Qualifications

Requirements

The research is to a large extent interdisciplinary, and a broad competence profile and experiences from relevant areas (below) are of specific value. We consider candidates with two different backgrounds for this position:

1)  A geophysicist or hydrologist with extensive experience in field surveying and numerical modelling of subsurface processes.

2)  Alternatively, a biogeochemist or microbial/soil ecologist with experience in soil chemical/microbiological analyses, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry or stable isotope labelling/tracing techniques.

Candidates with expertise in one of the above fields (or equivalent) are not required to have specific expertise in the other field, but should have keen interest in acquiring necessary skills, guided by experts of the team, and show strong commitment to applying these.

Applicants should have

  • A PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, with a focus on one of the fields listed above, completed no more than 3 years ago (exempting special circumstances)
  • A publication record commensurate with the career stage
  • Excellent knowledge in both written and spoken English
  • Good communication skills, ability to work in a team but also independently, and the drive to complete activities on time.

Merits

  • Knowledge in carbon cycling, greenhouse gas budget, or forestry research
  • Proven ability to complete ground-penetrating radar and electrical geophysical (e.g., resistivity, induced polarisation, self-potential) surveys for hydrological purposes
  • Experience in multivariate statistics or spatio-temporal analysis
  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages: Matlab, Python, R.

Application

Applications shall be written in English.
