Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; www.ludc.lu.se) opens a position for a Postdoctor. This is one of five positions now announced within the framework of the SSF funded project LUDC-IRC (www.ludc.lu.se/about-us/ludc-irc) and the strategic research environment Exodiab (https://www.exodiab.se/home/). LUDC is one of the largest diabetes research centres in the world with approximately 300 investigators and staff members working towards improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes. The centre combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and clinical diabetes and endocrinology to achieve these goals. LUDC has large unique biobanks and databases with genome-wide data linked to national registries providing information on disease aetiology, progression as well as outcome and treatment. The centre has in-house platforms for most molecular genetic methods and metabolomics. Omics-information combined with extensive phenotyping allows a systems medicine approach to dissect the complexity of diabetes. A central theme of the Centre is to develop precision medicine to improve health and the quality of life of diabetic patients.

Single cell RNA sequencing to identify Type 2 diabetes disease mechanism in human pancreatic islets

We have developed novel tools for analysis of single cell RNAseq data in human islets from diabetic (T2D) and control donors. This way we have identified disease specific gene regulatory networks (GRNs) that we believe represent the biological processes that are perturbed in each cell type in diabetes. Now we need to on a large scale functionally validate whether these networks in fact translate into functional networks.

Work duties

Cell type-specific impact of T2D on the transcriptome will be assessed with Single cell RNA sequencing in islets from T2D patients and controls using established pipelines. Cell type-specific GRNs will be computed using our novel method dGCNA. Potential subpopulations of alpha- and beta cells will be assessed using Patch-seq. GRNs will be functionally validated using CROP-seq.

Qualifications

Requirements

We are seeking a highly motivated person with:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant area
  • At least one first authorship publication
  • Excellence in molecular biology or bioinformatics
  • Documented excellence in CRISPR-cas9 technology and/or bioinformatics
  • Excellence in the English language (written and spoken) is a prerequisite

Merits

  • A strong background in the diabetes field is a merit but not necessary
  • Experience in patch clamp

Eligibility

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Terms

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

Instructions for application

The application should include: CV, publication list with top 5 publications indicated, personal letter, reference letter from at least one internationally recognized senior scientist, diplomas of university degree and high school grades.
