Subject description

Research at the Division of Physical Chemistry deals with surface and colloid science with strong links between experiment and theory. This area is approached with a broad perspective ranging from basic considerations of intermolecular interaction to their manifestations in condensed systems to practical consequences in industry and life sciences.

Job description

This project aims at the understanding of interactions between anisotropic colloidal particles and lipid membranes. Such interactions are of great relevance in as disperse fields as materials science, nanotechnology and branches of molecular biology. Nanoparticle-membrane interactions depend on the shape and surface properties of the nanoparticles as well as the physical and chemical properties of the lipid membrane. We have recently shown that the 2D crystalline arrangement of soft microgel colloids at the lipid membrane can be controlled by the phase behavior or the lipid membrane. In the present project, we will study adsorption and organization of anisotropic colloids at model lipids membranes. We will also investigate the possibility of particle translocation of across the membrane. The experimental studies include confocal microscopy techniques as well as scattering and surface techniques. The project will be performed at the division of physical chemistry, Lund University, and it is part of a larger research program “Anisotropic forces in colloid chemistry” funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Qualifications

pplicants should have a PhD within physical chemistry, or equivalent, with experience of experimental research in surface and colloid chemistry. Documented experience from experimental studies of self-assembled system composed of lipids and polymers, as well as documented experience in fluorescence microscopy techniques are strong advantages.   Documented excellent level of English (understanding, speaking, writing) as well as communication and presentation skills are essential. The candidate should have the ability to work in a team and collaborate with people from complementary disciplines.

Documents to include with the application: A cover letter (1/2-1 page) expressing a motivation for why you wish to join this postdoc project at Lund University, and how the present research project matches your own research interests and scientific background.
