Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Subject description
Wireless connectivity in cars is no longer mainly about traditional infotainment. The use of wireless communication in vehicles is growing rapidly and is a key technology to increase road safety and efficiency. For accurate performance predictions, it is necessary to consider the whole system, including the influence of the surrounding environment, other vehicles, the networking stack and the application. V2X communication will rely on different underlying communication technologies. In order to make realistic assessment of the performance and study the complementary behavior of, e.g. 802.11p and LTE, and possibly C-V2X it is necessary to be able to make detailed and simultaneous simulation studies, including the whole network chain and proper temporal behavior.

In the project we will work with a simulation framework (based on OmNET++, SUMO, Veins, and Plexe) for system and application level simulations where detailed models of the environment and antenna arrangements are used, parts of the communication system that are vital but also very specific in vehicular environments. We will develop cluster based channel models based on realistic environment descriptions achieved from detailed map data. To complement existing models in the literature, especially when it comes to directional properties in the considered scenarios, we will perform directional channel measurements in some selected scenarios.

Work duties
The main duties involved in this reseracher posistion is to conduct research and contribute to the project on wireless vechicular communication. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject area, as described above. The work includes development of suitable channel models for system level simulations, work with the complete system level simulator including realistic mobility patterns, environment description, channel models and communication protocols. Planning, participation and evaluation of measurement campaigns for channel characterization.
  • Collaboration with industry; the project is a part of a larger joint project with the Swedish automotive industry and hence includes project meetings and joint project work.
  • Teaching at undergraduate and graduate level, and supervision of degree projects and doctoral students, might be included.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
The applicant is expected to have, or be very close to obtain (expected degree within 6 months), a PhD degree in the area of wireless communication with special emphasis on the lower layers of the communication stack.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience from simulation of wireless communication systems.
  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research within the particular research area described above.

Other qualifications

  • Experience from radio channel characterization and modelling.
  • Experience from vehicular communication systems, such as 802.11p and C-V2X/LTE. Knowledge in antenna design and wireless propagation.
  • Knowledge about statistical signal processing and radio based positioning.
  • Knowledge in C++, MATLAB and LabView.
  • Practical experience from RF measurements, especially RF channel measurements

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 1 year.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. LTH uses a special qualifications portfolio to report and document qualifications – see link below. This is to be used also for appointments of researchers.
