Responsibilities

The aim of the project is to scientifically evaluate alternative policy options to conserve biodiversity in contemporary agricultural landscapes. In particular, the project will evaluate the contribution of alternative options such as reducing agricultural intensity or preserving semi-natural habitats at multiple spatial scales to both ecosystem services and the conservation of rare species. This will be done both by analyzing existing data and by designing and carrying out new designed studies at landscape scales. The focus of the project is insects such as butterflies and bees and their contribution to pollination of wild plants and crops. The successful candidate is expected to be involved in several multidisciplinary research projects within the research group Biodiversity and Conservation Science. The work of the group is embedded in the cross-disciplinary strategic research area BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate), to which the successful candidate is expected to contribute.

Qualifications

We are looking for a PhD in ecology, agronomy or environmental science with postdoctoral experience and a strong background in research on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Skills in carrying out field-studies at landscape scales, GIS-analysis and statistical analysis are required for the position. Knowledge about biodiversity in temperate agricultural landscapes, in particular insects, is a strong merit, as is knowledge about organic systems. It is important that the applicant has a proven ability to pursue independent research and keen to participate in multidisciplinary teamwork. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required; the candidate must be fluent in English. A driving license is required.

To be eligible for an appointment the applicant must have successfully completed a PhD degree or have corresponding scientific competence in a relevant subject area. The main criteria for the evaluation of applicants will be scientific skills. Emphasis will also be put on the extent to which the applicant can contribute to the general development of research within the research group and the strategic research area BECC.
