The Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies was founded in 1997 as a result of a government initiative. The Centre’s task is to develop expertise and understanding of contemporary societal, political and economic development in East and Southeast Asia. The Centre conducts education at the Master’s level as well as research. It features the largest library of its kind in the Nordic area and regularly organises visiting lectures, seminars and conferences.

Lund University hereby announces a vacancy for the position of a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Japan's and/or Korea's Contemporary society at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies.

The person employed is expected to work independently but should also cooperate with other researchers within the subject. The postdoctoral fellow should participate in and contribute to the research environment through active participation in research seminars and other research related activities within the subject, and thus stimulate theoretical discussions, contribute with own research within the field, as well as contribute to the general work of initiating new research ideas. The postdoctoral fellow should mainly conduct research at the workplace in Lund. Teaching, supervision and other teaching related tasks comprise 20% of the position at a maximum.

Qualifications: the candidate must have been awarded a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent not more than three years before the application deadline. Candidates who completed a PhD over three years ago must provide certificates of parental leave, illness or similar reasons for leave in the application.

Applicants need to have very good and documented knowledge of English as well as Japanese and/or Korean.

The grounds for assessment are a good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research, and teaching skills. The main criterion for assessment for a postdoctoral fellowship is research expertise. As documentation for the assessment of qualifications, applicants are to submit a project plan of the research they intend to carry out during their appointment.  Only applicants whose project plan and earlier works can strengthen the research environment will be considered for the employment as postdoctoral fellow.

Special qualifications are previous research and/or a project plan related to the Centre’s prioritized research areas, in particular domestic politics and social issues, civil society, digital developments and popular culture. Experience from arranging seminars and different public events is also valued. 

The application must include

  • a complete and signed CV and a certified copy of the PhD degree transcript
  • a list of publications (including ISBN and ISSN numbers)
  • a project plan of no more than 1500 words (not including list of references) of the research project the candidate intends to pursue during the fellowship.

The project plan is to have the following headings:

  • Aim and purpose of the project
  • Theory and method
  • Relationship to the existing field of research on the subject and its most important works
  • Timetable and expected outcome of the project
  • The applicant’s expertise and qualifications for the project
