Project description

The project for the postdoctoral position is development of theoretical methods for describing exciton condensation in semiconductors from basic physical principles. The theoretical methods are going to be based on density functional theory and many-particle Green’s function technique. The developed methods will be eventually applied to study real systems.

The work will be carried out in collaboration with experimental activities in the Wallenberg project Controlled atomic scale 3D ordering for exotic electronic phase.

Job description

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to carry out theoretical research in the area of exciton condensation which occurs in particular in bilayer systems and semiconductor interfaces. The main goal is, within the framework of density functional theory and many-particle Green’s function theory, to develop theoretical methods which can describe and predict the formation of exciton condensation from first-principles and which can be applied to quantitatively compute among others exciton density, phase diagram, and spectroscopic properties. The development of theoretical methods will be complemented by numerical simulations of model systems as well as real materials.

The work duties include, beside the above:

  • Code development and programming to carry out numerical simulations based on the developed methods.
  • Collaboration and support for experimentalists involved in the project.
  • Assistance with supervision of Master and PhD students.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in condensed matter theory.
  • Good knowledge in English, both in speech and writing.
  • Thorough knowledge in density functional theory and many-body theory, especially within Green’s function technique.
  • Good knowledge in computer programming and experience in developing first-principles methods.
  • Good understanding of electronic structure and electron correlations.

The selection of the successful candidate will be based on the requirements indicated above and the ability to cope with the challenges outlined in the anticipated assignments. This includes both proven skills and expected performance, not least in terms of the ability to work independently and to formulate and solve scientific questions.

In the letter to the application, the applicant is expected to show and briefly describe her/his qualifications corresponding to the above requirements.

This position is a two year qualifying appointment focused on research, with intention to be an initial career step.

Salary is determined on an individual basis, within certain guidelines for this type of position.
