Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Physical Geograhy and Ecosystem Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Clouds cover about half of the globe. Most of the volume of the troposphere where they occur is subzero, where clouds contain ice. Much severe weather is related to ice in clouds and causes much damage worldwide.

There has been controversy about initiation of ice in clouds, especially regarding the identity of aerosol species (‘ice nuclei’) initiating the first ice and whether their action is appreciably time-dependent.

The present project aims to represent lab observations of ice initiation in a cloud model and to investigate the effects from activity of ice nucleus aerosols on the cloud-scale.

The project is part of a larger collaboration between experimentalists and atmospheric modellers in Sweden, Norway and USA.

Jobassignment

The work will involve numerical modelling. The student will collect observations of clouds and simulate them, representing the ice nucleation with lab data provided by another partner in the project. The role of the time-dependence of ice nucleation will be assessed with models. This will involve coding with FORTRAN 90 in a UNIX Environment.

Desirable skills and qualifications

This position is an introductory step in a research career.

Students with a background in numerical modelling and with knowledge of physics and meteorology are encouraged to apply.

Requirements:

  • The applicant must have a bachelor's or master’s degree in physics, meteorology or an equivalent field.
  • Applicant should have experience of FORTRAN in UNIX environment.

It is desirable to have documented knowledge from their university education in

  1. Mathematics, especially differential equations
  1. Numerical methods and/or computer programming
  1. Physical meteorology (e.g. cloud physics).

In the application, applicants should provide evidence of how they meet these requirements.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
