Work duties

The work duties comprise teaching, supervision and research and shall secure and further develop a stimulating education and research environment.

The work duties include specific responsibility for teaching in international law in the Swedish law degree programme, in the programme’s specialisation courses and in the Master’s programme in international human rights law, taught in English. Furthermore, the work duties include supervision and assessment of degree projects as well as supervision of papers in the sixth semester of the law degree programme in the context of the course Essay in Legal Science. Other teaching and supervision duties may be included, for example within the framework of the faculty’s distance learning and contract education courses. It is assumed that all teaching staff at the faculty shall work for the educational development of the courses and programmes at all these levels. The work duties shall be carried out in close collaboration with undergraduate and Master’s students, doctoral students, teaching staff and researchers at Lund University and other universities as well as with wider society. Furthermore, the duties comprise an active and ongoing participation in and further development of the other activities at the faculty. These duties specifically involve active contributions to the further development of the research environment in international law.

Qualifications

A person shall be qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer if he or she has demonstrated teaching expertise, has been awarded a degree of Doctor of Laws or has corresponding research expertise or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it involves.   According to the Lund University appointment rules, to qualify for appointment the applicant shall have completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or have acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. In special circumstances, it is possible to consider as qualified a person who does not have at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria shall be the degree of the expertise required to qualify for appointment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of other qualifying criteria. Special consideration shall be given to documented solid and broad knowledge of the field of international law and human rights law. In addition to this, consideration shall be given to documented general breadth in jurisprudential expertise as well the applicant’s standing as a national and international researcher. Special consideration shall also be given to teaching experience in Swedish and English as well as experience of course directorship and examinations in undergraduate and Master’s education. Furthermore, special consideration shall be given to whether or not the applicant has good teaching skills, including an ability to develop and lead educational activities at different levels and with a variety of teaching methods. Given that the work duties may include teaching in both Swedish and English, experience in teaching and assessment in these languages is an advantage. Experience of teaching in Swedish is a requirement to teach in the Swedish law degree programme.

In addition, consideration shall be given to the applicant’s ability to engage with wider society and communicate his or her activities, general personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well, as well as the ability to lead and develop other activities, collaborative skills, independence, initiative and an ability for results-oriented work.
