Project description
The origin and evolution of sexual reproduction and sex differences, including the contribution of the sex chromosomes, represents one of the major unsolved problems in evolutionary biology. Sexual antagonism, when the same allele has opposite fitness effect between the sexes, is thought to be an important contributor to sex chromosome evolution and recombination suppression. Although much progress had been made both via theory and empirical research on the inevitable degeneration of heteromorphic sex chromosomes and consequent sex chromosome turnover, many issues remain unresolved, and recent data suggest that sex chromosome evolution may be more complex than previously thought. Many of the classic models of sex chromosome evolution build on simple scenarios involving one or a few loci, but the wealth of comparative genomic data on sex chromosome evolution that has recently become available suggests that new models are required to explain the diversity of sex chromosomes seen in nature. The aim of this project will be to investigate how sex chromosomes evolve using mathematical and simulation modelling, and how sexual antagonism might contribute to transitions from hermaphrodites to separate sexes.
Job description
Construction of analytical and simulation models of sex chromosome evolution, including multilocus evolution of recombination suppression, the evolution of interactions between the sex chromosomes, and the potential to evolve sex chromosomes via sexually antagonistic genetic variation in hermaphrodites. Development of new model ideas in collaboration with the principal investigator. Analysis and publication of results.
