Lund University, Universitetsförvaltningen, Sektionen Student och utbildning

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Academic Support Centre (ASC) supports Lund University students as they develop into independent and sophisticated writers, critical thinkers, confident presenters, and self-regulated learners. Through this process, we strive to help students create an identity in the academic world and to find their voice in the academic conversation. We are part of a bilingual Swedish-English centre that serves all Lund University students in either language at varying levels of ambition and confidence. We offer free individual consultations, workshops, and lectures at our facility and tailored to requests from the university’s faculties, institutions, and programmes.

We are looking for a temporary staff member to consult individually with students studying in English as well as hold some lectures and workshops. Both your consultations and lectures will cover topics across academic writing skills, study habits, and possibly public speaking skills.  For text-based consultations, you will have an hour of reading time to prepare, and an hour to meet students to discuss their writing process, texts, and ideas.  The ideal candidate is confident in discussing texts from many diverse fields, knowledgeable of writing pedagogy and learning processes, and comfortable teaching both one-on-one and larger groups.

Tasks
As a language and study consultant, you will:

  • tutor students from all faculties in academic writing, often through feedback on their texts (e.g., reflection essays, course papers, master’s theses). Consultations cover topics like academic norms and requirements, the writing process, academic argument, and language skills.
  • tutor students in effective study strategies, including time management, reading, and note-taking.
  • tutor students in effective presentation skills and dealing with nerves.
  • help international students decode Swedish academic culture (often together with study or writing skills).
  • be part of a successful team of nine writing and study consultants.
  • deliver lectures and workshops on diverse aspects of academic writing and academic texts, study and reading skills, and presentation skills.

Qualifications
The person we are looking for must:

  • have native-level English language proficiency;
  • have a teaching degree in English or a related field or be able to demonstrate equivalent pedagogical competence;
  • have one-on-one teaching experience and strong ability to scaffold concepts and skills;
  • be highly competent in text and genre analysis;
  • have strong intercultural communication skills;
  • listen respectfully to students who are often stressed and help them find satisfaction and even joy in studying and writing;
  • be able to work both independently and on a team.

Merits
The person we are looking for ideally:

  • has experience of both the Swedish university system and one or more international university systems;
  • has certification in or strong experience teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • has knowledge and experience of international writing centres and writing centre literature.
