Description

The Lund ATLAS group is involved in new physics searches with hadronic jets in the 13 TeV ATLAS dataset, as part of its physics program focused on physics beyond the Standard Model. The research program planned for the course of Run-2 includes searches in a variety of final states including hadronic jets, aimed to either discover or constrain new physics phenomena, including Dark Matter benchmarks. The group has strong interest and expertise in improving data taking techniques and hadronic jets performance for Run-3 as well. Other group activities include grid computing, active work in the ATLAS luminosity group and on the Transition Radiation Detector.

The selected candidate is expected to contribute to new physics searches for dark matter and dark sector particles at the LHC, through the analysis of data in multi-jet signatures and in boosted topologies. The selected candidate will work on the improvement of the online event selection techniques and the performance of the physics objects used in these searches. The candidate is expected to take a leading role in physics analysis, as well as to make a substantial contribution to the performance of jets and the trigger system of the ATLAS experiment. The selected candidate will actively participate in the supervision of a PhD student working on outlier detection techniques in calorimeter signatures for dark sector searches.  The research activities are located at the Department of Physics at Lund University. Frequent visits to CERN will be required. This position is partly supported by the ERC Starting Grant DARKJETS, Action number 679305.

Entry requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Good knowledge in spoken and written English is a requirement.

Basis of Assessment

Prior experience in detector and analysis work in particle physics, collaborative skills in order to work in a large collaboration and scholarly proficiency are the main requirement for employment. Programming skills in Python and C++ are of relevance for this position. Applicants must show a high degree of research expertise as manifested in the quality of their PhD dissertation and other publications. The application must include a research plan that shows the applicant's own ideas for research within the context of the research topics in the Lund ATLAS group.

In addition to the above, the following set of criteria will be applied in the assessment of candidates:

  • Relevance and viability of the research plan
  • International experience
  • Results and distinctions that attest to the applicant's ability to do research
  • Ability to engage in activities that inform society at large about research

Evaluation of the applicants will take their experience, knowledge and other personal qualities into consideration. The applicants' ability to use their skills and experience to strengthen and supplement existing research activities within the Lund ATLAS group will be also considered.

Terms of employment

The qualifications for academic positions and basis of assessment are given in Chapter 4, Section 3-4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
