Job description
The oceans, "the blue fields", are considered by many to be important for future food industry. The project is interdisciplinary and deals with new marine food and consumer issues where analytical chemistry, biotechnology and social science are important disciplines. The purpose of the PhD project is to develop new advanced analysis methods for macro algae (seaweed). So-called "green" solvents will be used in the methods, for example mixtures of water, pressurized (supercritical) carbon dioxide and ethanol. Both health-promoting (e.g. carotenes, phlorotannins and sterols) and toxic substances (e.g. cadmium, mercury, lead, arsenic) in seaweed will be analysed. The aim of the project is partly to develop new, modern analytical methods, and partly to characterise seaweed samples and seaweed-based products of various kinds of consumer interest. The project is a collaboration between Lund University and the National Food Administration, and is financed by the Swedish Research Council Formas.
Research environment
The doctoral student project will be conducted at the Department of Chemistry (KILU), the Center for Analysis and Synthesis (CAS), at the research group Green Technology Group (GTG) (http://www.kilu.lu.se/cas/research/green-technology-group/). The doctoral student project will be technically and theoretically challenging and scientifically inspiring, and CAS is an excellent educational environment for a doctoral student. As a country, Sweden offers one of the best employment conditions in the world for Ph.D. students, including a yearly salary of about €33000 and a strong social security net.
