Subject description

Biotechnology is central to the transition to a sustainable society. In the biotechnology research subject, microorganisms or components of these are developed and utilized to achieve technically useful goals with environmentally sustainable methods. Special applications are environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and biotechnology for health.

The research to be carried out is part of the ScanOats project (http://www.scanoats.se/), an industrial research center funded by the Foundation for Strategic Research (https://strategiska.se/). The work will mainly be carried out at the Division of Biotechnology at Kemicentrum, Lund University, in collaboration with researchers within the other work packages of ScanOats and with the companies Lantmännen, Oatly and Swedish Oat Fiber.

Work duties

This sub-project within ScanOats will focus on the oat lipids. These will be analyzed by gas chromatography, HPLC, mass spectrometry and other methods. The emulsifying properties of polar oat lipids will be investigated, and opportunities for oat-based lipid products with saturating properties will be studied. An area of particular interest will be to study and try to control the lipid conversion reactions that in the event of unfavorable treatment cause rancidity development in the oat lipids. In this context, it will be studied which of the components of oats are important (enzymes, antioxidants, etc.) and how oats can be processed for optimal taste and functional properties.

The main work duty involved is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, as well as supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
