Lund University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Work duties The Division of Solid-State Physics, is now seeking a Researcher who will be responsible for conducting a research and development project within nanoimprint lithography and its applications. The project includes experimental studies of novel fabrication methods of nanoimprint master stamps with sub-10 nm features, using both subtractive and additive approaches. Such approaches may include, but not limited to, block-copolymer lithography and other "bottom-up" methods, in combination with reactive ion etching, sequential infiltration synthesis or other suitable techniques. A second task of the project is to investigate and develop possible methods of ultra high-resolution pattern transfer from the imprinted resist into a hard substrate - this is an essential step for different device applications. The conventional methods of pattern transfer using, for example, a lift-off technique, may not work when the lateral sizes shrink below 10 nm. The problem of reproducibility becomes very challenging at such dimensions and might be regarded as one of the bottlenecks of single-digit nanofabrication.

The project is of mainly experimental character and will address the above-mentioned challenges. It is expected that the results, obtained during this project, will be used by other research groups and the Lund Nano Lab. Also, the work includes a close collaboration with other researchers, both within and outside the Division of Solid-State Physics and NanoLund.

Responsibilities will include:

  • A systematic work using different fabrication and characterisation techniques, such as nanoimprint and electron beam lithography, reactive ion etching, atomic layer deposition, scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry and other methods
  • Analysis of the obtained results and writing up reports. Participation in writing of research papers.
  • In close collaboration with other researchers and research engineers at Lund Nano Lab preparation of detailed specifications of the newly developed processes.
  • Development and preparation of test samples using nanoimprint and electron beam lithography for the current project and for other projects.

Qualification requirements Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in Nanotechnology, Materials Science or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English, including the ability to write technical documentation
  • Hands-on experience in nanoimprint, electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching
  • Hands-on knowledge of scanning electron microscopy
  • Knowledge of basic semiconductor processing
  • Excellent communication skills and team-oriented approach

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with semiconductor process development
  • Experience with deposition methods (evaporation, chemical vapor and atomic layer deposition)
  • Experience with atomic force microscopy
  • Ability to operate complicated processing equipment

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development. We expect you to be self-motivated and have an ability to prioritize in your work assignments. In the selection of the successful candidate, much emphasis will be placed on hand-on experience and the ability to produce reliable experimental results.

With this recruitment, we hope to create the required knowledge to develop nanoimprint infrastructure and generate new processing expertise at LNL for use in various research projects.
