Lund University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

We are developing entomological laser radar for monitoring insects and pests in forestry setting, and now seek to improve our understanding of light scattering from insects, in particular the Ips typographus bark beetle. We will do this by laboratory reference measurements in vivo and ex vivo. The reference measurements include melanisation and depolarization ratios for body and wing components as well as spectrally fringed coherent scattering from thin films.

Work duties Learning how to operate the existing imaging system (hardware and software). Improving the software for controlling the instruments. Testing and calibrating the instruments. Quantify spectral and polarimetry scattering cross sections for forestry pests. Determine the effective wing membrane thickness of Ips typographus. Scientific reporting.

Qualifications Applicants must have:

  • Mcs. in Photonics
  • Have conducted master thesis work in Biophotonics
  • Peer-reviewed international publications in the domain of bio photonics
  • Experience in 3D printing
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Good skills in the experimental arrangements of optical imaging setups
  • Excellent skills in Matlab
  • Knowledge in image post-processing

Other merits We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
