Lunds universitet, Centrum för miljö- och klimatforskning (CEC)

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Center for Environmental and Climate Research, CEC (http://www.cec.lu.se) carries out research education and communication on environmental and climate research at Lund University. A part of that is coordination of Modelling the Regional and Global Earth System (MERGE, (http://www.merge.lu.se/), a cross-faculty strategic research environment at Lund University. MERGE focuses on the development and application of advanced models of the role of the terrestrial biosphere within the climate system. As a collaboration between Lund University (leader), a number of other Swedish universities and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI, MERGE aims to develop a new generation of climate models and to use these to study global and regional climate changes and impacts. The research contributes to a variety of international networks and institutes.

Assignment
The scientific programmer will contribute to the further development and maintenance of the computer models used within MERGE, including a regional climate model (RCA-GUESS), a global Earth system model (EC-Earth), a dynamic vegetation/ecosystem model (LPJ-GUESS) and others.

Tasks will include:

  • The development and extension of models to incorporate new processes and submodels
  • Installing and testing models on a range of HPC systems, in Sweden and internationally
  • Testing, coupling and evaluation of individual model components
  • The development of diagnostic tools for model evaluation (e.g. ESMValTool)
  • Maintaining contact with LUNARC (www.lunarc.lu.se), ECMWF and NSC for the transformation, archival, transfer and storage of meteorological and other large datasets arising from the model runs performed by MERGE researchers
  • Maintenance of the DataGURU environmental and climate data server (https://dataguru.lu.se/) including: making sure the server is running, responding to user emails (mainly reports of processing errors) and implementation of new data sets.

The work will support and be carried out in close cooperation with researchers involved in the development and applications of the models.
