The Faculty of Law is offering one doctoral student position for a Doctor of Laws Degree within labour law. The doctoral student position is partly financed by the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (Forte) and is integrated into a larger research project ‘Prolonged Working Lives, Older Workers and Dismissals. A Study of the Dynamics between Employment Protection, Non-Discrimination and Collective Bargaining’. Intended supervisors are Professors Mia Rönnmar and Jenny Julén Votinius.

An ageing population is a pressing societal trend, which poses specific challenges for labour law and collective bargaining. The research project will contribute with new knowledge on labour law and the role of the social partners in this context. The research project seeks to address the following problem: to what extent does the legal protection in dismissal situations in Sweden, provided by employment protection, non-discrimination and collective bargaining, enable older workers to keep their employment and thus contribute to the general promotion of prolonged working lives? The research project combines employment protection law, non-discrimination law and elder law and includes the important interplay between Swedish law and EU law. The research project adopts an interdisciplinary industrial relations-perspective, for example, through studies of collective agreements. The research project will be carried out within the Norma Research Programme, and its Elder Law Research Environment, and in collaboration with the Health Law Research Centre at the Faculty of Law.

The doctoral project will focus either on the legal protection of older workers in dismissals for personal reasons (including a study of case law from the Swedish Labour Court) or on older workers, non-discrimination law and aspects related to age, disability and gender.
